I clenched my jaw as his words sunk in. Teal was his daughter? Why would he want to kidnap her? And why ask me to do it? Of course, I was capable, but a strange sadness tugged at me.
"She'll be safer with you than she ever will be with Alexander. I trust you more than I trust her husband," he continued, exhaling a cloud of smoke. "I know Alexander married her for his own gain."
Six months until New Year's Eve. That's how long he wanted me to wait. But why not do it now?
"What's in it for me?" I asked, my tone measured.
Lucifer's grin grew even wider. "I'll entrust her to you. Or, to put it another way—you'll marry her. Isn't that what you've been planning all along?"
I laughed, a genuine burst of joy escaping me. Yes, that had been my desire all along—to have someone like her by my side. Extending my hand, I sealed the agreement with a firm handshake. Lucifer studied my hand briefly before shaking it, saying, "That's the spirit of youth."
