Chapter 22 A Slap

I was so lost in my own thoughts that I couldn't remember how long it took before I finally fell asleep.

When I was awakened by the bright morning sun, I let out a long sigh, slid out of bed, and headed for the bathroom. I was going to have another long day of nothing to do.

A soft knock on the door drew my attention, and I watched as a maid brought in a small plate of fresh fruit, pastries, juice, and coffee. The usual breakfast-time routine made me feel more like a robot than a living person.

"Thank you," I said to the young woman, who bowed to me and turned away, blond curls bouncing in her head, and left without another word.

She had been the one bringing me food for the past few days. Although she didn't say anything, I still smiled inwardly at the thought of someone here.

After combing my hair, I decided to wear a long white cotton dress and lie like that for the rest of the day. After all, I wasn't going anywhere.
