ORIGIN: North Australia.
This ghost like figure is said to haunt the area around East Point, a popular coastal spot lined with Poinciana trees.
According to the legend, the Poinciana Woman is the tormented spirit of an Aboriginal or mixed-race woman who suffered a brutal death at the hands of white settlers or soldiers during the early colonial period.
The story says she was either raped and murdered or, in some versions, she took her own life after being raped and left pregnant.
She hung herself from a Poinciana tree, and the strength of her anguish bound her spirit to the location forever.
People who have seen her ghost describe her as a tall, shadow lady with long, dark hair and glowing eyes.
She is sometimes seen beneath the branches of a Poinciana tree, weeping softly or letting out screams that pierce the night.
The Poinciana Woman is feared as a vengeful spirit who lures men, especially those who disrespect women, to their doom.
They follow her ghostly figure into the darkness, only to disappear— some say forever.
