Chapter 20

Regina was jolted awake by a soft knock on the bedroom door. She turned to the side, wishing that whatever it was, was a distraction or a dream but a moment later, the housekeeper's voice, Magaret filtered through the wood with an urgency in her tone.

"Madam Regina, your mother is here."

Regina exhaled a shaky breath, dragging a hand down her face in disbelief. What now? Her mother never showed up without reason. Never arrived without a carefully calculated motive. She never called, never gave notice, and certainly never dropped by uninvited. But here she was.

It felt… insane. And yet, Regina could already sense the dread of her presence creeping into every corner of the mansion.
