Maria's face was unreadable. "Why are you in such a run-down place?"
Her comment left me feeling crushed. If Hannah were still with us, she'd likely be deeply hurt by those words.
"Hannah never had kids of her own, she only brought me up. Tomorrow marks the anniversary of her passing."
I hadn't visited her during any holidays this year.
Surely it wasn't too much to pay my respects now.
"You've returned to us now, so why dwell on her? Change your outfit and come downstairs with me to greet the guests."
Maria grabbed my arm, intending to lead me away.
I pulled free from her grasp. For the first time, I couldn't hold back my tears.
Hannah had raised me and shown me great kindness.
She'd done her utmost to care for me within her means.
Why did Hannah provoke such revulsion in Maria?
"Ruby, were you aware that your caretaker was involved in child trafficking? If she hadn't taken you, how could we have failed to find you for so long?"
Her words left me stunned.
