"You and I, Ruth," Frank clarified, his tone firm. "You remember me mentioning this before, right? This time, we'll do it the right way. Carefully."
I nodded, though my stomach churned at the thought of going out there again. "Are we taking the bodyguard with us?"
"Not yet," Frank said, his voice clipped. "Anything else?"
It was clear he was hinting for me to leave. I'd probably interrupted something between him and Luke, and they wanted to get back to it.
I stood, glancing between the two men. "Thank you," I said, though the words felt hollow.
Luke gave me a nod, but Frank didn't even acknowledge me. He just turned back to the table, his expression unreadable.
Luke walked me to the door, opening it for me as I stepped into the hallway. I headed back to my room, my mind racing.
Esther was still there, sitting on the edge of the bed. She looked up as I entered, her expression curious.
"How did it go?" she asked.
