As the final bell rang, signalling the end of the day, students started flooding out of the classrooms in a flurry of laughter and chatter. The air was buzzed with energy as most of the students were gathered in groups.
Away from the bustle, Yuto and Hakuji sat together on the low brick wall near the exit of the school.
Yuto's gaze was downcast, his nose was red as he repeatedly wiped it with a crumpled napkin.
Hakuji was watching him quietly. A faint disappointed smile was tugging at his lips.
Yuto then tossed the napkin away, turning to Hakuji with hesitant eyes, "H-Hakuji, do you have another n-n-napkin?" he asked with a shaky voice.
Hakuji's smile softened and he reached into his pocket pulling out another napkin. Without a word, he extended it towards Yuto, who with shaky hands took it and continued wiping his nose.
"Come on Yuto, stop crying already" Hakuji said lightly.
"I'm not crying" Yuto mumbled, avoiding Hakuji's gaze and kept wiping his nose.
Hakuji's faint smile remained as he looked ahead, catching sight of Jin and Chisaki emerging together from the school, walking side by side, their hands intertwined, fingers firmly interlocked as if nothing could pull them apart.
Behind them, their friends circle with three boys and four girls, following them, all seemed lively and full of energy, their laughter ringing out as they chatted and joked with one another.
Hakuji's gaze stayed fixed on Chisaki, her cheerful smile and light laughter warming the air as she chatted with Jin.
A faint smile curved on Hakuji's lips as he silently observed them, his thoughts unreadable.
"You still haven't talked to Chisaki?" Yuto's voice cut through the silence, jolting Hakuji from his thoughts.
Turning to Yuot, Hakuji's smile faded, "What makes you think that I'd ever talk to her?" he asked calmly.
Yuto frowned in confusion, "You love her, so why not tell her?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine curiosity.
Hakuji let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head slightly, "Naah, I'm good, I don't want to get rejected," he said with a faint smile. "Just admiring her from a distance is enough for me." With that Hakuji turned his gaze ahead, observing them from a distance.
Following Hakuji's gaze, Yuto turned to watch them as well.
Jin and Chisaki then settle inside Jin's car, the rest of the group following suit and splitting between two cars. The engine hummed to life, and soon they were gone, fading into distance.
"How about you buy a sports car?" Yuto suggested.
Hakuji sighed softly, sliding off the wall, and offering a hand to Yuto who held it and also came down.
"I can, but I like spending money on my room." Hakuji said with a faint smile.
Yuto nodded in understanding, and together they both began walking down the street, heading towards their respective houses...
Hakuji and Yuto then arrived at Yuto's house, a small house with a small bakery tucked beside the house.
'Yuto's parents once ran this bakery but after they passed away, his uncle and aunt took over everything, his house, his bakery and even his custody. They turned his own bakery into his prison, making him work like a servant under their control.'
Hakuji and Yuto stood outside the house,
"Alright, Hakuji see you tomorrow." Yuto said.
Hakuji gave him a small nod, saying "Make sure you don't get late tomorrow!" His tone was firm.
Yuto managed a weak smile, "It depends on how fast I'll finish my night duties" He replied with a calm tone.
Hakuji stood silently, his gaze remained fixed on him, his expressions serious but eyes soft by a subtle empathy in his eyes.
"Yutoooo!" A sharp roar broke the quiet, startling Yuto, but Hakuji remained still, unfazed.
From Inside the house an old fat man in his mid fifties stormed out, his face flushed with anger.
Standing before Yuto, the old man bellowed, "How many times have I told you to come straight home after school?" His voice, harsh and filled with frustration.
Yuto flinched, visibly terrified, he quickly lowered his head in a deep bow, "I'm really sorry, I will be careful from now on." His voice shook with fear.
"Shut your filthy mouth!" The old man yells again, his voice rising in fury, "Your aunt is inside the bakery waiting for you, go and start cleaning!"
Yuto, still trembling, nodded quickly while bowing before he quickly straightened up and rushed inside the bakery.
The old man's gaze then shifted to Hakuji, his eyes narrowing as he took in the sight of Hakuji, who was staring right into his soul, his expression's stoic, tight grip on his bag's strap revealed the anger boiling within him.
The old man smirked mockingly, "Hey you young rich brat!" he sneered.
Hakuji's jaw clenched in anger, his intense gaze fixed on the old man, unwavering and filled with silent fury.
"What's the matter?" Old man sneered, his tone laced with malice, "don't you want to help your friend? Go on, look, your friend is working like a slave, go and help him."
With that he let out a sharp laugh, reaching into his pocket for a cigarette. He placed it between his lips, flickered the lighter and lit it up. Taking a deep drag, he exhaled the smoke slowly, sending a thick cloud directly into Hakuji's face.
Hakuji stood unfazed, his expressions dark with simmering anger as kept staring at that old man. Then, without a word he turned around and began walking away, the old man's cruel laughter echoing behind him.
Hakuji's jaw tightened, clenching his fist in frustration. As he was passing the bakery he instinctively looked inside. Through the entrance gate he saw Yuto still in his school uniform, hunched over, scrubbing the floor. With his aunt sitting on the counter barking orders at him with a cold dismissive air. The sight only deepened his anger causing his grip on his bag's strap to tighten further.
Hakuji gazed at the scene before quickly turning his gaze ahead. With a tight expression he continued walking, and went past the bakery...
Later that night, Hakuji was lying on his bed, surrounded by scattered snacks. His airpods were on, listening to a song while playing games on his tv screen, his expressions remained dark with anger.
'You probably wondering why I didn't do anything'
'Well, I did. A few months back I kinda stormed inside the bakery, wanting to take Yuto with me by force. And in the chaos I ended up landing a punch on that old fart's face. It was satisfying.'
'But things went bad after. That old fart called the cops on me, and I ended up spending a night in prison. I was released, but I got banned from entering the bakery or even touching those old morons, so I'm hopeless now, patiently waiting for that beautiful day when those old fart's will die…'
The darkness was now consuming the scene, only a hum sound of a song was playing around.
Hakuji barely cracked his eyes open, his blurred vision fixed on the ceiling above.
"What the hell is going on?" He muttered, his head spinning, disoriented. He quickly pulled out his airpods. Once they got removed, the faint sounds of zombies murmuring started reaching his ear, only adding to the confusion clouding in his mind.
"Damn, I forgot to close my game again" Hakuji muttered and sat up straight on his bed, his vision still hazy, unable to see anything clearly.
Hakuji pressed his palm on his forehead before vigorously rubbing his eyes. Gradually his vision sharpened, but his eyes remained heavy with sleep. He glanced up at the TV, only to find it turned off. Yet the eerie murmurs of zombies still echoing in the room.
His confusion deepens as slowly glances at his gaming PC, only to find it was also switched off. A chill of uncertainty crept through him. His eyes then shifted to the balcony, here he noticed black smoke rising from the street below.
Hakuji's eyes narrowed in confusion, and as he focused on the balcony he observed the zombies' murmurs coming from the outside. Hakuji's eyes widened in disbelief.
Frantically, he jumped off the bed, and with hurry and panic steps he rushed to the balcony, stepping inside the balcony, as his gaze swept over the street below his heart sank. His eyes wide in utter disbelief.
The neighborhood was in utter chaos. Zombies roamed the streets, their grotesque forms feasting over humans' lifeless bodies. The air was thick with the stench of smoke and blood.
Hakuji stood frozen, gazing at the chaos with utter disbelief, his heart pounding loud in his chest, each beat louder than the other.
"What the fuuuuu*k!" He screams out loud.
