Ch 116 : Wedding invitation

Rainy Day.

Kakashi, Guy, and Hakumen entered the barbecue restaurant one after another, shaking the raindrops off their clothes at the entrance.

"What a heavy rain," Hakumen sighed.

The dense curtain of rain outside obscured their vision, with only a few blurred figures moving along the street.

"The weather is going to warm up," Kakashi remarked.

"Shouldn't it be cold on rainy days?" Guy asked in confusion.

Kakashi didn't bother to explain further and walked straight into a private room with Hakumen.

Everyone was already there—except for Shizune and Rin.

"Yo, Kakashi, Hakumen, Guy."

Someone greeted them.

Kakashi glanced at Obito and was surprised to see him sitting listlessly in his seat.

He didn't even say a word when Kakashi arrived, which was quite unusual.

"You didn't invite Makoto?" Anko asked.

"Lord Makoto is busy with official duties," Hakumen explained.

Asuma chuckled, "Well, he is an important figure in the village, after all."

Just as Kakashi sat down, Genma leaned over and whispered, "Looks like Obito failed in his confession. He hasn't said a word since he got here."

Kakashi's eyes flickered slightly, but he didn't say anything.

The group chatted idly, while the sound of the pouring rain outside added to the cozy atmosphere of the private room.

They began ordering food. Since the two girls wouldn't order anything even if they arrived, there was no need to wait for them.

Before long, the curtain of the private room was lifted, and two graceful figures walked in.

"Are we late?"

Everyone's eyes turned towards them, then instinctively glanced at Obito, who was still sitting there.

Rin looked at Obito briefly but maintained her usual calm expression as she walked over and took the empty seat beside Kurenai.

"Not at all, we just finished ordering," Kurenai said with a gentle smile.

"Sorry, I got held up by something," Shizune apologized.

Everyone was curious whether something had happened between Obito and Rin.

After all, nothing else seemed capable of making someone as carefree as Obito act this way.

It was common knowledge that Obito liked Rin—and that Rin liked Kakashi.

But Kakashi was like a block of ice.

No one really thought Rin's feelings for him would lead anywhere.

Instead, most people believed that someone as kind and gentle as Rin might be better suited for Obito.

Rin, however, seemed completely oblivious to the subtle tension in the air and chatted with the others as if nothing had happened.

The conversation soon shifted to Hakumen's promotion to Jonin, which took everyone by surprise.

"Why didn't you tell us earlier? We could've planned a celebration," Asuma said.

"It's not such a big deal, no need for that. Besides, everyone's here now, so let's just consider this the celebration," Hakumen replied with a smile.

Not a big deal? Becoming a Jonin wasn't important?

Everyone was speechless, realizing that geniuses must think differently.

Guy, sitting on the side, clenched his fists. "I have to work even harder!"

Plates of barbecue were brought to the table one after another, looking incredibly appetizing.

It wasn't long before the aroma filled the air as the meat sizzled on the grill, making the atmosphere even livelier.

Shizune said, "I'm going out of the village with Lady Tsunade."

"For how long this time?"

Shizune had previously left the village with Tsunade for a while but returned during the war with Iwagakure.

Everyone assumed it wouldn't be too long this time either.

Shizune thought the same and said, "I'm not sure."

Rin sighed, "I wish I could travel with Lady Tsunade too."

As one of the Legendary Sannin, Tsunade was an idol to all the female and medical ninjas in the village.

Rin deeply admired Shizune for being able to become Tsunade's apprentice.

Although her own teacher, Minato, was excellent, his expertise wasn't in medical ninjutsu.

Recently, Rin felt that her medical ninjutsu had reached a limit, so she decided to focus on improving her overall strength instead.

She was preparing to tame the Tailed Beast and become a perfect Jinchuriki—not only her own goal but also Kushina's hope for her.

Shizune chuckled softly, "What's so great about that kind of life? I'd rather stay in the village with everyone."

Obito watched Rin laughing and chatting with the others, his heart filled with bitterness. The memory of what she had said to him earlier made his chest ache even more.

"Obito, why aren't you eating?" Anko suddenly asked, drawing the attention of several people at the table.

Forcing a smile, Obito replied, "I... just don't have much of an appetite."

Asuma grinned, "You still have to pay whether you eat or not."

Kurenai quietly leaned in closer to Rin and asked, "Did something happen between you and Obito?"

Since Rin entered the room, she hadn't spoken a single word to Obito.

Even a fool could tell something was off... though perhaps Guy hadn't noticed, as he continued chatting with Obito as usual.

Everyone was curious, but no one dared to ask directly.

"Just ignore him," Rin said simply, picking up a piece of meat and putting it into her mouth.

At that moment, Hakumen suddenly took out a thick stack of envelopes and stood up, distributing them one by one according to the names.

"What's this?" The group looked at the envelopes curiously.

Upon opening them, they realized they were wedding invitations.

"Lord Makoto is getting married," Hakumen announced.

The room fell silent for a moment before a chorus of shocked exclamations erupted.

"Makoto... Makoto is getting married?!"

"No way!"

Everyone looked astonished, finding it hard to believe.

"The wedding is next month. Lord Makoto asked me to hand these out to you all," Hakumen continued. "He hopes everyone can attend."

Kakashi and Guy, who had known about this in advance, remained unfazed, unlike the others.

The rest exchanged glances, feeling that this was just too unbelievable.

Isn't Makoto about the same age as us? Getting married already?

They couldn't imagine themselves getting married at their current age; the thought was almost unsettling.

"Who's the bride?" Kurenai asked.

"She's Lady Ayari from our clan," Hakumen replied.

Most of the group didn't know the bride, but Anko recalled having seen her once when she visited the Hyuga compound to look for Makoto.

She remembered the woman being quite beautiful, though she seemed to be a fair bit older than Makoto.

Asuma commented, "Maybe… marriages in these prestigious clans are different from what we imagine."

Rin looked down at the invitation in her hand.

Her name was written on it, and without realizing it, she tightened her grip on the card.

He's about to get married, yet he's still so unreliable…

"Rin?" Shizune called out to her curiously from the side.

"It's nothing… I just find it hard to believe." Rin looked up and smiled.

She was probably the only one who would describe Makoto as unreliable.

Everyone continued marveling at Makoto's upcoming wedding.

When Anko mentioned she had seen the bride before, the group eagerly asked if she was pretty.

"She's quite pretty."

The sizzling sound of meat grilling on the stove filled the room.

Rin took a sip of tea, the rim of the cup resting against her lips, and the rising steam blurred her vision slightly.

"Should we prepare gifts for the wedding?"

"Of course."

"I've never been to someone else's wedding before."

"I went to one when I was little, with my parents."

"What does getting married feel like?"

"It must be really happy—after all, you get to be with a beautiful girl."

"Genma, you're such a pervert."

Rin turned her head towards the window, gazing at the hazy rain outside.

The chatter of the group filled her ears, yet an inexplicable sense of restlessness welled up inside her.
