Ch 117 : Kiss
By evening, the rain had stopped.
Outside the Hokage building, Rin paced back and forth alone, her gaze frequently drifting toward the office upstairs.
Puddles had formed on the ground, and every so often, she would lightly place her shoe on the water's surface but never dared to press down too hard.
"Are you waiting for me?"
Makoto's voice suddenly broke the silence, startling Rin and causing ripples to splash across the once-calm puddle.
She straightened up and glanced at Makoto, who had just walked out of the Hokage building.
Casually, she pointed in another direction.
"I... was just passing by."
Even she didn't believe the excuse she had just made.
After all, who would just happen to pass by the entrance of the Hokage building?
Rin's gaze wavered, as if unsure what exactly she was trying to avoid.
"Let's take a walk together," Makoto suggested.
"...Alright."
He took the lead, and after a brief hesitation, Rin followed.
"You're... getting married?" she suddenly asked.
"Hakumen gave you the invitations, right?"
"Yeah, during dinner."
"Be sure to come," Makoto said casually.
"Why so soon... I mean, aren't you only in your teens?"
Rin pursed her lips as she spoke. "Is this... arranged by your clan?"
It almost seemed like she was offering Makoto an excuse, her eyes stealing glances at him frequently.
Makoto smiled. "I'm the head of the Hyuga clan. Who could arrange something like this for me?"
"I just felt it was time to get married, so I did. And the girl... she's someone I really like."
"..."
Rin fell silent, though only for a brief moment.
Suddenly, she chuckled. "Everyone was so shocked to hear about your wedding. It's a shame you weren't there to see it."
Makoto chuckled as well. "I can imagine."
He rarely joined their gatherings, and apart from a select few, he wasn't particularly close to their circle.
Hakumen, on the other hand, had already blended in well through Kakashi and Guy.
Rin continued, "I've already made things clear to Obito. Even though those words might have hurt him, it's better than letting things become a bigger misunderstanding in the future. Now, I can pursue Kakashi without any worries."
Makoto glanced at Rin, sensing a hint of farewell in her words.
He suddenly stopped walking, prompting Rin to halt in confusion and look at him.
"What's wrong?" she asked, glancing at the empty alleyway beside them.
"Are you taking this road?"
"Rin, look at the sky," Makoto suddenly said.
Hearing his words, Rin looked up in confusion.
The sky was gray and overcast after the rain—not particularly beautiful.
But before she could react, an arm wrapped around her waist, and in the next instant, she was lifted off the ground and propelled rapidly into the sky.
The sudden movement made Rin gasp in surprise, and she instinctively clung tightly to Makoto.
His chest was warmer and more solid than she had imagined.
Rin shut her eyes tightly, feeling her heart pounding wildly, with only the sound of the wind rushing past her ears.
She didn't know how much time had passed when they finally stopped.
As Rin cautiously opened her eyes again, she was astonished to find herself above the thick cloud cover.
Below them, the clouds stretched like a vast white ocean, with half of the sun dipping beneath the horizon in the distance.
Higher up, the sky was a deeper shade of blue than she had imagined, and the sunlight reflected off the clouds in breathtaking colors.
"What do you think?" Makoto's voice pulled her out of her awe.
She quickly pushed him away, realizing he was still holding her, and said angrily, "You! Why do you always act on your own without asking for permission?!"
Makoto watched Rin's angry expression with a smile, but he could sense there was no real anger behind it.
Suddenly, he leaned in close and took a deep breath.
"What are you doing?!" Rin backed away in alarm.
Makoto said, "You smell really nice."
Rin's face instantly flushed red, and she stammered, "W-what?!"
Makoto continued, "Such a strong barbecue smell. I could smell it the entire way up here, and now I'm starving."
Rin: "..."
Her face alternated between red and white as she realized he was teasing her on purpose.
Feeling thoroughly provoked, she lunged at him, ready to hit him, but Makoto laughed triumphantly and drifted away before she could catch him, leaving her fuming in frustration.
Rin, enraged and embarrassed, shouted, "You bastard! Come here! I'm going to kill you!"
Makoto chuckled lightly, "You're not acting very ladylike."
"Who acts like this to a lady?!"
"I'm not a gentleman."
"You're a pervert! A hooligan!"
When Rin's anger subsided a little, Makoto slowly floated back down.
He lay back as if he were a small boat drifting on the surface of a lake, quietly enjoying the beautiful scenery around them.
It was exceptionally quiet above the clouds. Rin, seeing how relaxed Makoto was, said, "I want to be like you."
Makoto asked, "Want to lie in my arms?"
"Dream on."
Makoto then gently controlled Rin's body, and they both slowly lay down.
Rin felt as if there were a soft bed beneath her, making her feel very comfortable.
The two floated above the clouds, initially enjoying the scenery.
But as they drifted closer together, Rin, unable to resist, extended her foot and kicked him.
"Don't get too carried away."
"Who told you to get so close to me?"
"Do you know whose territory you're in right now? If you keep provoking me, I'll throw you down."
"I don't believe you," Rin laughed.
Seeing that his threat didn't work, Makoto suddenly smirked mischievously and said, "Then do you believe I'll do something to you? After all, there's no one else here."
Rin's eyes widened in an instant, her face flushing lightly. "Pfft, you shameless pervert!"
What Rin didn't expect was that Makoto, with a wicked grin on his face, actually leaned in closer toward her.
She tried to retreat, but found she couldn't move, feeling like a lamb to the slaughter.
In a panic, Rin quickly crossed her arms over her chest, shut her eyes, and screamed, "Ah—pervert!"
Then, there was silence.
Rin carefully opened her eyes, but Makoto was gone.
She looked around, but there was no one in the sky above the clouds.
"Hey..." she tried calling out.
"Makoto?"
"Where did you go?"
There was no answer.
She floated there, alone, surrounded by an eerie silence.
Rin suddenly felt a chill.
The once-beautiful scenery of the clouds no longer appealed to her.
"Stop messing around, come out."
"I won't kick you anymore."
She kept calling out, though she knew deep down that Makoto was probably just playing a joke.
Still, not seeing him made her feel uneasy.
As she turned around, Makoto suddenly reappeared in front of her, grinning at her, causing her heart to skip a beat in surprise.
"You..."
Just as she was about to angrily curse him, Makoto's face moved close to hers, and he lightly kissed her cheek, like a dragonfly touching water.
Rin froze in place.
After the kiss, Makoto continued to smile at her. "Am I a bad guy?"
Rin didn't respond, probably too stunned by what had just happened.
Her face, visibly red, turned even darker, the blush creeping all the way to her ears and the back of her neck.
She suddenly turned away, her hands covering her face, silent.
Why is she embarrassed now...
A quiet laugh escaped, and Makoto drifted closer, reaching out to gently remove her hand from her face before leaning in again.
Rin, flustered, tried to pull away. "W-What are you doing?"
She looked into his face, only inches away, and her mind went blank.
It felt as though she was about to suffocate.
Makoto gently cupped her chin, but this time, his target wasn't her cheek.
Rin felt a wave of panic, an instinctive fear, as though she had fallen into a deep, dark well.
"Makoto, stop... I... I like Kakashi."
"Love who you want to love."
"This is my first kiss."
"Then I am honored."
"You're about to get married."
"Doesn't that make it even more thrilling?"
"Makoto, mmm..."
