Ch 127 : Wedding night

The appearance of Ayari amazed many, causing numerous people to exclaim that she was truly a fitting match for Makoto.

Aside from the age difference, they looked like a perfect couple, with the man being talented and the woman beautiful.

Orochimaru, the Hokage who had long been hiding in the village, also made a point of attending the wedding.

His presence caused quite a stir, as many people hadn't seen the Hokage in quite some time.

However, his former influence still lingered, and the crowd respected him greatly.

With a smile, Orochimaru exchanged some kind words with Makoto, showing off his acting skills.

After all, he wouldn't have been able to win over so many children to work for him in the original story if his acting hadn't been on point.

The wedding proceeded smoothly, following the set traditions, with guests offering their well-wishes.

However, halfway through the ceremony, Rin quietly slipped away.

She left the Hyuga clan grounds and immediately felt the street become much quieter.

The bustling world behind that door seemed cut off from her now.

Rin paused for a moment at the entrance and looked back one last time before leaving.

Although the news of Makoto's wedding had spread throughout the village, it didn't really affect the ordinary villagers; it was just another topic for them to gossip about.

As she walked down the street, she unexpectedly ran into two familiar faces.

It was Samui and Mabui.

The two women couldn't walk through the streets without drawing attention.

One had rare dark skin and an exotic look, while the other was a cold beauty with long blonde hair and a striking figure, making her even more eye-catching.

When Rin was asking Yugito about some questions regarding the tailed beasts, she would often run into Samui and Mabui, but their relationship was far from close.

They would hardly exchange more than a few words.

After all, they were Kumo Ninjas and prisoners of war.

When the two saw Rin, they were a bit surprised.

Mabui couldn't help but ask, "Miss Rin, has Lord Makoto's wedding already ended?"

Given their status, they hadn't been invited.

Rin calmly replied, "Not yet."

Her attitude made Mabui feel awkward, so she didn't say anything more and left with Samui.

Meanwhile, at the Hyuga clan's compound, during the banquet, Anko and the others noticed Rin was missing.

They had initially thought she had gone to the restroom.

"Where did Rin go?"

"I don't know. Did she leave early?"

"That doesn't seem like her. Why wouldn't she tell us?"

They exchanged puzzled glances.

Rin wasn't the type to just leave without saying anything, especially in a situation like this.

"Kakashi?"

Kakashi slowly shook his head. "I don't know."

The group then turned their attention to Obito, but he just scratched his head awkwardly.

He had been enjoying the buffet with Guy and hadn't been paying attention to Rin's whereabouts.

Kurenai said, "I've noticed that Rin hasn't seemed quite herself today, like there's something on her mind."

Anko nodded, "You're right, I feel the same way."

Could Rin's concern be related to Kakashi?

Could it be that seeing Makoto get married triggered something about her own feelings for Kakashi?

Everyone's eyes involuntarily turned toward Kakashi.

Even Kakashi started to wonder if it was because of him…

It seemed that he hadn't been clear enough when he rejected Rin.

He thought to himself.

"Kakashi!" Obito suddenly spoke up, "I warn you, don't let Rin get hurt!"

"Idiot, I don't need you to remind me," Kakashi responded, not holding back.

Obito stood there, silently clenching his fists.

He had a lot he wanted to say and many things he wanted to do, but thinking about what Rin had said to him before, he hesitated to cross any boundaries.

The others exchanged glances, all thinking the same thing.

It's a battlefield!

Kakashi then left to find Rin.

He planned to talk to Rin properly and make it clear that he didn't have romantic feelings for her, and because of Obito, he could never be with her.

Kakashi found Rin sitting alone on a bench near the village gate, lost in thought.

"Rin."

"You came?"

"The wedding isn't over yet," Kakashi said.

"Oh..." Rin just replied indifferently, her attitude casual.

She rested her hands on the bench, gently swinging her legs back and forth.

"I just didn't want to stay there anymore."

Kakashi was awkward in the conversation. He had planned to come and be honest with Rin, but now he didn't know how to start.

"Some people still hope you stay there," he said.

"Who?"

"Obito," he meant to express that Obito wanted to be with her.

"..."

Rin felt irritated. "What does Obito have to do with this?"

She then asked, "Kakashi, what do you want to say to me?"

"..."

Kakashi was left speechless.

The sight of Kakashi in his clumsy adult clothes looked somewhat comical and awkward.

Suddenly, Rin understood his intentions.

She looked directly into Kakashi's eyes, but Kakashi kept avoiding her gaze.

"Kakashi."

"…Rin."

Rin suddenly said, "Everyone around me knows that I like you. You know that too, right?"

"..."

Kakashi didn't know how to respond.

Of course, he knew, and he had been avoiding it all along.

Rin asked again, "Kakashi, have I confessed to you before?"

"…No."

The one time Rin wanted to open up, it was when they were surrounded by Iwa ninjas.

Kakashi had interrupted her then.

At that time, Obito sacrificed himself to save them, and Kakashi blocked Rin's words with Obito's intentions.

Rin continued to question him, "Have I ever asked anything from you?"

"…No."

"Have I made you uncomfortable?"

"…"

"Then why… why are all you guys so self-righteous?"

Rin said this with increasing emotion, her breathing becoming rapid as her chest heaved.

Kakashi was left speechless.

He was a little dazed, not even understanding where he had gone wrong, and suddenly being scolded like this.

What was his purpose for coming here in the first place...

Rin's emotions quickly calmed again.

"Kakashi, you know how I feel. If you want to reject me, please just say it clearly, okay?"

Kakashi remained silent for a long while before finally sputtering out, "Rin, Obito really likes you."

"..."

After a brief silence, Rin suddenly laughed, but it was a laugh driven by frustration.

That bastard, Hyuga Makoto, can openly talk about having both sides, but Kakashi, you can't even outright reject me? Instead, you use Obito as a shield.

Kakashi was originally the most outstanding person in their circle, promoted to Jonin at twelve, always known for his maturity and composure.

But he was still just a teenage boy.

Boys at that age, when it comes to emotions, are no different from those kids in the ninja academy.

Kakashi was just like the ill-fitting adult clothes he was wearing.

In Rin's mind, she couldn't help but compare Kakashi to Makoto, and the result was clear.

Then she thought to herself that she must have gone mad.

Why compare the two? Was she measuring their place in her heart?

Why did she feel the need to do that? Neither of them belonged to her.

Rin felt like she had become one of those cliched women in novels—desiring what she couldn't have, and indifferent to what was easily within reach.

If only things were like with Obito, where he treated her the way she wanted...

Though she knew it was unfair to Obito, that was how she truly felt.

If Makoto really liked her, why would he marry someone else?

Without receiving a clear answer from Kakashi, Rin's smile gradually faded.

"Alright, let's go back," she said, lowering her head, her expression growing incredibly calm.

Rin walked away, and Kakashi stood there, still in a daze, unable to fully process what had just happened.

The wedding of Makoto and Ayari eventually concluded, and the couple said their farewells to the remaining guests.

Before leaving, Orochimaru deliberately said to Ayari, "Make sure to give Makoto a good child."

Ayari felt quite embarrassed by this comment, simply taking it as a blessing from the Hokage, though in her heart she couldn't help but wonder why Orochimaru was so concerned about her unborn child.

By nightfall, the guests had already left, and the Hyuga clan had cleaned up the venue.

The courtyard grew quiet as Makoto and Ayari snuggled together, gazing at the starry sky.

"There are so many stars up there. Do you think there are two that, just like us, are together?"

Makoto thought for a moment, but didn't say anything about how most of those stars were likely just massive fireballs like the sun, and that even stars that seemed close were actually so far apart that a person could never reach them in their entire lifetime.

"Yeah."

"Makoto."

"Hmm?"

"Did you ever think about what marriage would be like before today?"

"I did."

"Chores, daily life, everything mundane?" Ayari suddenly laughed, recalling an answer Makoto had once given.

"That's someone else's life," Makoto said, holding Ayari tightly.

"For us, we'll definitely be happier than others."

"Chores and daily life don't necessarily mean unhappiness," Ayari replied.

"If we were just ordinary people—if you went out to work every day, the kids went to school, and I stayed at home waiting for you both to come back…"

Makoto laughed. "Why are you making it sound like our lives now aren't happy?"

Ayari lay in his arms and softly said, "If you were just an ordinary person, I'd be even happier."

"...What do you mean by that?"

Ayari didn't answer his question. Instead, she suddenly asked, "Makoto, do you know when I started liking you?"

"When?"

Ayari's expression turned nostalgic as she slowly began to recount the past.

"Back then, you had just returned from the battlefield. I was originally worried that you might be troubled, so I wanted to comfort you. But then I realized how much you had changed—how much more mature, stronger, and resilient you had become..."

"You started making me delicious food, buying me small gifts, and trying to cheer me up... Sometimes, I even wonder if you are still the same Hyuga Makoto I once knew."

Makoto: "..."

Ayari chuckled to herself and said, "Although I don't want to admit it, when I think about it carefully, I think I must have fallen for you back then."

"At that time, you weren't yet the clan leader, not yet the Hokage's assistant, not yet the hero of the village..."

"Makoto, besides me, is there anyone who fell for you back then?"

Makoto, hearing this, only tightened his embrace around Ayari and whispered in her ear, "Idiot, no one else liked me back then except you."

Ayari said, "I like you, but I don't really understand you. I've never truly understood you."

Makoto's eyes flickered slightly as he calmly replied, "Ayari, no one understands me more than you."

Ayari suddenly laughed aloud. "Then you must be terribly lonely."

"..."

Facing Shin's silence, Ayari continued, "Makoto, do you think I'm a competent wife?"

Makoto answered, "I like you, you're competent just the way you are."

Ayari laughed again. "You're good with words."

Makoto said, "Competence shouldn't be measured by someone else's standards. You're my wife, and I like you—so you're competent."

Ayari smiled even more happily and asked, "Then, will you be a competent husband and a competent father?"

"..."

Ayari looked up at Makoto with a playful smile and asked, "Don't you want to know what my standards for competence are?"

Makoto slowly squinted his eyes. "One moment you're all affectionate, and the next, you're throwing out some clever lines."

Ayari countered, "Is that my fault?"

She suddenly turned her head toward the living room.

Under the warm yellow light, a figure was busy moving about inside.

"My sister is really pitiful," Ayari suddenly said, then glanced back at Makoto.

"But sometimes, I feel like I'm even more pitiful than her."

Makoto responded, "You're happier than she is."

Ayari laughed. "You're so unreasonable. Do you think my happiness is for you to decide? That depends on how I feel, doesn't it?"

Makoto said, "You're different from her. She wants something from me, and I happen to be willing to give it."

Ayari continued laughing. "If I had strength like yours, I would definitely castrate you and cut off that tongue of yours for talking nonsense!"

Makoto, unfazed, pulled her into his arms. "Then what about your happiness for the rest of your life?"

Ayari looked nonchalant. "I'd just do what you would—find another man."

"You wouldn't dare!"

"Right now, I don't dare, but once my son grows up, I'll have him castrate you!"

Makoto: "... My son would never do that."

"Haha... We'll see when the time comes."

Perhaps Ayari was tired from laughing; her expression settled into calmness.

She wrapped her arms around Makoto's neck. "I'm tired. Carry me back to the room."

Makoto scooped her up horizontally and walked toward the living room.

When they passed Ayano, who was still doing housework, none of the three spoke.

Ayano simply stepped aside to make way for them.

Once in the bedroom, Makoto placed Ayari on the bed.

Her arms remained wrapped around his neck.

Makoto thought she was asking for a kiss, so he leaned down to kiss her, only for her to turn her head away to avoid it.

"Makoto..."

"Yeah?"

"Do you love me?"

"I do."

"I don't believe you."

"Then I don't."

"I still don't believe you."

"Then what will make you believe?"

"Do you want to go to my sister's tonight?"

"... I do."

Ayari let out a sudden laugh.

"And this is what you call love?"

"It's not contradictory. It doesn't stop me from loving you."

"Do you love her?"

"No."

Ayari lay on the bed, looking at Makoto in front of her.

"I believe you now, you scumbag."

"Alright then, I'll go."

Ayari said nothing, merely releasing her hold on his neck and turning her head to the side.

Makoto walked out of the bedroom, intending to take a shower.

As he turned, he caught sight of Ayano's graceful, hazy silhouette in the living room.

It was their wedding night...
