The scent of antiseptic burned Elisa's nostrils as she stepped into the cold, sterile hallway of St. Mary's Hospital. The flickering fluorescent lights above , set her nerves on edge. The hospital was busy but Elisa could hear only a high screeching sound that seems to be coming from her brain. She barely remembered how she got there.
Her parents had promised to be there by noon to help her move out of the university dorms into her new apartment, around 11pm they had called her sounding panicked. The echo of her mother's last words over the phone, echoed in her mind.
"Stay indoors, sweetheart. We have something important to tell you. Be careful."
Her mother had never sounded so urgent before. What had they wanted to tell her? Why had they never gotten the chance?
She had called her mother back. No answer.
She had called her father. Straight to voicemail.
