Chapter 66: A Letter
[This chapter describes Feng Wutong, skip if not interested.]
The next day.
In the Star Luo Royal Academy, in the mimicry cultivation area.
The sound of light footsteps echoed through the forest, their owner seemingly in a good mood.
The fiery red figure leapt through the woods, like an elf.
It was Feng Wutong.
She held a lunch box in her hands and looked towards the direction of the waterfall not far away, joyfully thinking:
"Today's dish is stir-fried pork with green peppers, paired with two vegetarian dishes, and a bowl of chicken soup. Dai Yao really loves this."
The happiest person about Zhu Zhuqing's departure from the Star Luo Royal Academy was not the girls who had feelings for Dai Yao, but rather Feng Wutong.
But she knew the truth: he was just a commoner, and Dai Yao was a prince. The difference in their statuses was like a chasm—nothing could come of it.
Moreover, her martial soul was only a Blaze Phoenix. While it was considered decent among ordinary soul masters, compared to the top-tier martial souls in the soul master world, it was still lacking.
Thus, despite her feelings for Dai Yao, she could only keep them hidden in her heart and maintain the proper distance while interacting with him.
She even tried to form a brotherly bond with him, simply to have a legitimate reason to be near him.
However, ever since Zhu Zhuqing left, no one had been responsible for Dai Yao's meals. Dai Yao didn't know many people in the academy and was unwilling to have unfamiliar faces handle his meals, so this task naturally fell to Feng Wutong.
Of course, there would be a reward for this.
While the reward was substantial, what Feng Wutong treasured more were those moments of conversation when she delivered his meals.
Those brief moments were the ones she looked forward to every day.
Faint voices of chatter reached her ears. They belonged to several girls, their voices filled with excitement. From their conversation, Feng Wutong could tell they wanted to go and catch a glimpse of the legendary Dai Yao.
"Hmph."
Feng Wutong thought with dissatisfaction,
"These fox spirits were once dismissive of Dai Yao, but now they're all flocking here. How shameless."
However, when she thought of Dai Yao's cold attitude towards them, her expression softened a little.
Shaking off the group of girls, Feng Wutong continued on her way to the cultivation area.
"Eh?"
She noticed that the figure, who had been sitting quietly by the waterfall for the past three years, was no longer there, and she let out a soft gasp.
"Could he be in the cave behind the waterfall? That makes sense. Zhu Zhuqing just returned yesterday; she usually cultivates in the cave."
"Only Zhu Zhuqing can make Dai Yao stop cultivating."
Feng Wutong bitterly thought, but she didn't feel a hint of jealousy. Zhu Zhuqing's beauty made her feel inferior.
Although others considered her a great beauty, compared to Zhu Zhuqing, she was still somewhat lacking.
After a few more leaps, she arrived in front of the waterfall. The water droplets from the waterfall splashed onto her skirt.
"Dai Yao, Zhu Zhuqing, I've brought your lunch!"
She called out loudly.
But there was no response from behind the waterfall. She called again several times, but still, there was no sound from the cave.
"Why aren't they responding? Could they not be in the cave?"
Feng Wutong hesitated. Her voice had been quite loud, and even with the waterfall as a barrier, they should have heard her.
However, the cave was a private space, and no matter if the owners were there or not, it wasn't right to trespass into someone's private area.
After much hesitation and with the temperature of the lunch box dropping, she gritted her teeth and stepped through the waterfall.
As soon as she entered the cave, she was startled.
The cave was empty. The once cold and damp space had transformed into a primitive forest, with trees growing wildly and flowers blooming in a riot of colors.
"How did it turn into this?"
Feng Wutong exclaimed in surprise.
But she didn't pay too much attention to the strange changes in the cave. She searched the area, but seeing no one, she leapt back out from behind the waterfall.
"Where could they have gone? Could it be that they weren't cultivating and instead were... doing that kind of thing in the room?! But they're only nine years old!"
Feng Wutong shook her head, tossing away the thought, and after a few more leaps, she arrived at Dai Yao's small wooden house.
She knocked on the door.
No answer.
"I'm coming in!"
She tried to push the door, but was surprised to find it wasn't locked.
The wooden door slowly opened, and her gaze became dazed. Her mouth slowly dropped open, and the lunch box in her hands fell to the ground, spilling the dishes and rice, with the chicken soup flowing everywhere.
The house was empty. Many things were gone, as though it had been robbed.
"I should have known."
"I should have realized when Dai Yao wasn't cultivating by the waterfall."
Feng Wutong felt a bitter pang in her heart, knowing that Dai Yao had already left. Over the past few days, she had noticed his odd behavior, but the joy of their interactions had overshadowed these signs.
Now, in this moment, all the strange occurrences from the past few days rushed back to her mind.
It was as though she had lost all strength, and she slumped against the doorpost to keep from completely collapsing.
Her fiery red hair seemed to lose its usual luster, no longer shining with its former brilliance.
She stared blankly at the empty wooden house, feeling sorrowful.
She knew she couldn't hope to be with Dai Yao, especially with Zhu Zhuqing, his beautiful fiancée. All she could do was bury her feelings deep inside.
But Dai Yao's quiet departure shattered her heart.
He didn't even leave her a note.
His departure without a word only proved that he hadn't considered Feng Wutong as a friend.
The enthusiasm she had shown over the past three years seemed like a joke. The coins in her pocket, given as a reward for delivering his meals, now seemed even colder, revealing the crudeness of her performance.
"Ah, nobles are truly like that, merciless and unfeeling. I'm just a lowly commoner, what was I even thinking?"
Feng Wutong forced a smile, but tears uncontrollably streamed down her face.
Three years ago, when Dai Yao cut through the battlefield and his icy hand had gripped her throat, this man had left an indelible mark on her heart.
She slapped her own face, trying to shake herself awake. "Get a grip, don't fantasize."
As she slapped her face, she suddenly noticed a letter on the wooden table.
Feng Wutong walked over to the table, picked up the envelope, and saw that it was addressed:
Feng Wutong, personal delivery.
Upon seeing these words, her mood instantly shifted from sorrow to joy, and she couldn't help but smile.
She thought back to her recent train of thought and couldn't bear to look back.
Opening the envelope, she began to read:
To Feng Wutong, please burn this letter after reading.
This small wooden house is only visited by you, so only you will see this letter.
By the time you open this letter, Zhu Zhuqing and I will have already left the Star Luo Empire and are on our way to the Heaven Dou Empire.
This matter is of great importance, and I apologize for not telling you earlier. I could only leave the letter for you after we had left.
We've been together for three years, like family, but due to the side effects of your mutated martial soul, you need to stay at the hot spring to suppress the inner fire and cannot leave with us.
Thank you for the companionship over the last three years. I will definitely find a way to resolve the side effects of your martial soul, but it will take some time.
If you leave the Star Luo Royal Academy, please leave a note with your destination, so I can contact you once I've found a solution.
Lastly, thank you, Wutong.
As she reached the end, Feng Wutong involuntarily smiled. "Really, this little brat, acting so mature... as if I didn't know your real age."
"Fool, how could you possibly fix the side effects of my martial soul? Even the teachers of the Star Luo Royal Academy wouldn't know how. But I'll remember your kindness."
The self-pitying Feng Wutong from earlier had completely vanished.
She tidied up the small wooden house, cleaning it thoroughly before heading to the lake. There, she began to comb her hair by the water.
Her fiery red hair, like flames, flowed down her back.
Moments later, Feng Wutong had transformed. The reflection in the lake showed a beautiful figure.
She radiated a heroic aura.
The most eye-catching feature was the high ponytail she had tied up...
