Chapter 5

"Hey, she agreed. You can start extracting now."

Zoran lazily dialed a phone number behind me, issuing a command that shattered my heart.

"No! I didn't agree!"

I threw myself at his feet, repeatedly kowtowing.

"Please, spare my child."

"I'm willing to exchange my own blood instead, I beg you..."

"The baby is so small, she surely won't survive!"

Blood dripped from my forehead, but I seemed numb to the pain, mindlessly pleading.

Zoran stood there coldly watching me, without a shred of hesitation.

After what felt like an eternity, the door finally opened from the outside.

Serenity sauntered in, leaning on Zoran's shoulder.

"The vital blood worked wonders. That psychic wasn't lying to us after all. My headache vanished instantly."

"That's good. At least the child proved useful for something."

Hearing this, I immediately collapsed to the ground, utterly hopeless.

"We should thank you, Melody. If you hadn't just given birth, we wouldn't have known where to find this vital blood."

I lay on the floor, my eyes vacant, no longer wanting to speak to them.

"Where's the baby?"

Serenity pointed and said, "She's in the next room. You should go see her."

"When they drew blood earlier, she was too small for anesthesia. She cried so pitifully, it was deafening. Thankfully, she's quieted down now."

I rushed to the adjacent room. It was empty, save for a tiny figure curled up on the white hospital bed.

When I took the child into my arms, I could barely feel her breathing.

"Baby, open your eyes and look at mommy, okay?"

But no matter how I called to her, there was no response.

"Is anyone there? Please, save my child!"

"Is anyone there? Anyone at all..."

But the neighboring room was already deserted, and there wasn't a soul on the entire floor.

I hastily pulled out my phone to call the hospital. Before the call connected, I suddenly realized the child in my arms had no movement in her chest.

With trembling hands, I felt for her breath, then broke into uncontrollable sobs.

"Hello, this is City Hospital. How may I assist you?"

"Hello? Hello?"

...

The phone slipped from my hand and fell to the floor. The child in my arms gradually grew cold. I stood up, carrying her, and walked out of the hospital. Surprisingly, no one stopped me along the way.

I knelt alone in the memorial hall to silently weep, having handled all the funeral arrangements by myself,

A large group of people came barging in noisily from afar.

Upon seeing the black and white portrait on display, Zoran's face turned deathly pale.

"How... how could this be..."
