Chapter 9

As expected, driven by guilt, Damien was willing to give me anything. My assistant immediately handed over the transfer agreement, but when he took the pen, he didn't sign right away. Instead, he looked up at me pleadingly.

"Scarlett, before we do this, I'd like to speak with you alone for a moment. Is that okay? Please, give me a chance to explain. I really..."

I interrupted him with a smile, "Sure!"

Why not hear his ridiculous explanation?

I was curious to know what else he could possibly say. Men always seem to think that no matter what they've done wrong, an explanation is some kind of cure-all. They believe that as long as they open their mouths and spout nonsense, women will have no choice but to believe them for various reasons.

But in the face of cruel reality, all explanations are weak and powerless.

The conference room was left with just the two of us.

Damien sat across from me, silently staring for a long time without saying a word.
