Chapter 5

Today I'm unusually quiet.

Seraphina touches my forehead, asking if I'm feeling unwell.

I nod slightly.

Her expression suddenly changes, and she asks anxiously,

"What's wrong? Why didn't you say something earlier?"

I touch my chest and look up at her.

"Here, it feels heavy."

Seraphina pauses for a moment.

"Seraphina, do you ever lie too?"

She stares at me, her eyes clear, reflecting my image.

The room suddenly falls silent.

Seraphina, being clever, counters with a question.

"Alec, did you see something?"

"Don't overthink it."

She reaches out to gently fix my hair, her voice soft.

"I do know him, but if you don't like it, I won't see him anymore."

"Okay?"

"I didn't mean to hide it from you."

She speaks so sincerely that I can't tell if it's true or not.

In the evening, Seraphina stands by the couch and turns off the lights.

"Alec, it's time for bed."

I look up at her, "Aren't you going to sleep?"

Seraphina chuckles, "I still have work to do, baby."

"You go ahead and sleep."

Seraphina tiptoes to the study.I closed my eyes, tossing and turning on the couch, unable to sleep.

My memory only spans two days, leaving me clueless about everything.

Seraphina hasn't said a word about why I have amnesia.

But given the current situation, it seems I'm slowly recovering.

Yet my heart races, feeling like I've forgotten something important.

After an unknown stretch of time, there's another knock at the door.

It's particularly jarring in the silent night.

Two knocks at a time, tap-tap.

I snap my eyes open, and suddenly the knocking stops.

Then comes the sound of the door opening and a man's voice.

"Seraphina."

He's back again.

I crawl off the couch and open the study door.

Seraphina is nowhere to be seen in the study, but the laptop screen is still lit.

Her phone sits on the desk, its screen also aglow.

I walk over and take a quick glance.

Over a dozen missed calls.

And dozens of WeChat messages.

The last one was sent ten minutes ago.

[Then I'm coming to find you now.]

The door doesn't muffle sound well. Standing in the living room, I hear a man's voice from the hallway outside.

"Seraphina, why are you ignoring me?"

"Gunner!"

Seraphina lowers her voice, sounding somewhat impatient.

"I told you not to come."

"Why?""Whisper, he's a light sleeper."

"But I can't sleep, Seraphina." His voice carried a hint of complaint, "Won't you chat with me for a bit?"

"Gunner!"

I walked step by step to the door, gently opening it.

The motion-sensor lights in the hallway flickered on, revealing two figures standing outside.

The night had grown cold, yet Gunner wore only a dress shirt, looking as if he'd just gotten off work.

He looked down at Seraphina, enunciating each word.

"I can't sleep."

Seraphina stood there, silent.

"Oh."

Gunner waited for a long moment with no response, then nodded in understanding.

"I'm going for a drink, then."

He turned to leave, but after a few steps, Seraphina grabbed his arm.

"I've told you, it's not safe to drink at night."

Gunner turned back with a smirk, "Why do you care?"

"You care about me, but what about your Alec?"

He suddenly pointed at me, raising his gaze to meet mine.

In those eyes, I saw a challenge.
