chapter 6: Natasha Silver

.

...

[3 days later]

A tall black woman with dreads was seated in a café while she typed away on a laptop. There was a cup of coffee near her and she occasionally took a sip from it.

Within the same café, various people were giving her stares, possibly because of her beauty, or perhaps it was because they recognized her, or maybe it was the fact that she was using a very expensive Laptop that only a few could afford, or perhaps it was all of the above.

"Hm, he doesn't seem to be anyone of great importance; his family is middle class, definitely not on the same level as us; he seems to be quite normal in all aspects, Nothing extraordinary or of value."

The woman spoke to herself as she stared at the information she dug up on Leon Merlin.

The man had nothing to note aside from his weird last name nothing else stood out to her, aside from the fact that his family ran a business relating to spirits, because of this Natasha was having a difficult time finding the merit in marrying him, she suspected his family was highly superstitious and as atheist she found the idea of spirits ludicrous.

Her father always seemed to know what to invest in and what not and she understood that.

"Only put effort in things that bring merit not in things that don't."

That's what she was taught by her father and what she believes is the correct mindset; what did her father know about Leon Merlin that she can't find herself?

Her father would never invest in stuff that doesn't have benefits. As such, Leon should have some value; it didn't make sense otherwise.

While on the subject of Leon, she recalls making a promise to meet each of them to spend time and get to know them, but she hasn't received a call or anything of the sort to inform her of their meetup. She figures he probably spent the last two days getting to know the other two and he should contact her shortly.

*Bzzt Bzzt*

Her phone rang, notifying her of a call; she took and answered the call. Incidentally, Natasha had a regular smartphone rather than a holo-screen phone.

"Hello?"

"Speaking"

"Alright, I'll be there, which hospital?"

She was informed that Leon had been hospitalized, and She didn't need to adhere to the request, but she also needed to understand the merit in her marrying him as she didn't see any at present; what is it that her father knows that she doesn't?

"Alright, I'll be there in an hour."

She dropped the call and on her wrist, she double-clicked on her smartwatch which let out a beeping noise, once that was done she began to pack up her things and gulped down her coffee before exiting the café, a car pulled up the moment she exited, the same model Selina was driving, she entered it and told her driver to the location of the hospital.

….

Leon lay on his back on a hospital bed as he watched the television on the wall. The series that was playing was garbage, as a person who was into more action-oriented shows and animation. He never liked drama series and the like.

So to him, whatever this show he was watching was, it was absolute trash, but it helped pass the time for 3 days, so he couldn't complain. The fairies playing around the hospital did provide some entertainment but laughing at what appeared to be nothing does make one seem crazy.

Thinking about it now, Leon genuinely failed to comprehend why such things as spirits, magic, and fairies were being hidden; he didn't understand why mages wanted to keep themselves hidden as well.

Leon was under the impression that if everyone in the world could use magic then humanity would advance by leaps and bounds.

Something that violates the laws of nature, like magic, would be a great boon to society. Sure, yeah, there might be a little bit of disorder, but the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Imagine if a person like Albert Einstein could use magic; the things they would come up with would be out of this world, but no, the dumb old geezers at the top want to preserve the peace.

"Stupid old codgers, they just like the power"

Everyone having magic would mean they aren't special anymore and their bloodlines have zero weight.

Leon decided to put such thoughts at the back of his mind and simply waited for Natasha to arrive, and in just an hour, the woman was now standing next to him with a rather cold gaze.

"Sup?"

"What happened?"

"Nothing, just jumped off a cliff that's all."

There was a silence that lasted quite a while as Natasha waited for him to burst into laughter due to the joke he just told though she found it to be in poor taste.

However, that laughter never came, which prompted her to raise a questioning brow, and Leon simply nodded, answering her questioning expression. This was then followed by a squint in her eyes, trying to determine if he was lying or not.

"You really jumped off a cliff?"

Natasha remained calm; hearing outrageous things was something she was used to, though in her case, those outrageous things involved money and the stock market, so this was a first, but she kept her poker face.

"Yeah."

He confirmed and caused her to place her hand on her chin almost as if, in thought, she was going to place it on her mouth in a gesture of shock, but as a reflex of trying to keep a poker face, she placed it on her chin instead.

"Why?"

She could not comprehend why on earth any sane person even so much as think that; she understands that sometimes when one is on higher ground, they get the urge to jump, but they don't do it.

"Well, Selina asked me to prove to her that I love her by jumping off a cliff."

"You jumped off a cliff because someone asked you to?!"

This man just said yes to the question: if you were told to jump off a cliff, would you?

'What's next? Is he gonna ask how high if I told him to jump'

Her poker face had slipped and now showing slight shock.

"Anyway, I should be out here in a couple of days; the fall wasn't that hard, I only broke a leg and a few ribs, so I should be going home on the weekend."

He informed her he told her all this in hopes she could tell Selina; since he didn't have a way to call her, he was able to call Natasha because he remembered the number on the business card her father gave him when they met.

"I see, was that all?"

She asked and he nodded.

"Very well I hope you recover well however I also have some questions for you"

She sat as she pulled the chair in the corner of the room closer to the bed and sat closer to him.

"Aight, shoot"

She said as he prepared himself for her question. He had no doubt that she was probably going to ask about the whole marriage thing.

"Why does my father want me to marry you? What is it that he gains from you marrying me?"

She didn't believe for a second that her father would ask something like this of her and there would be no benefit for himself, her, or the company.

"Can't really say, you should ask him yourself, only he knows the reasons why."

He answered although he was aware that was not the answer she was looking for. Natasha let out a small sigh, before asking again.

"What do you get, what's in it for you in marrying me? What do you get out of this whole thing?"

She rephrased her questions but was ultimately asking the same question. There had to be something more to this than just a marriage, something they were keeping from her.

"I get you, and if possible all three of you gals, any man would be happy to have three wives, and those who do already are happy"

She frowned, surely his reasoning wouldn't be so shallow.

She didn't think of him as the type to just do things because of such a shallow reason, she didn't believe that about most people.

"Is my father threatening you or your family?"

"heh! Please"

He answered dismissively, something that caused her brow to raise, it was almost as if he didn't see her father as a threat.

'odd'

"Are you threatening my father?"

She asked, although she thought the question itself was ridiculous, a noname nobody would ever have the resources to threaten her father.

"Haha! Of course not, he's the one that came to me"
