Chapter Nineteen: A Hidden Truth

Spring cleaning had never been something James enjoyed, but with Charlotte by his side, even the dullest chores felt bearable. They worked together, sorting through old clothes, dusting shelves, and reorganizing rooms.

James was rummaging through a storage box when he pulled out an old handbag. He glanced at it curiously. "Charlotte, is this yours?"

Charlotte looked up from folding clothes and frowned. "Oh… I think so. I haven't seen that in years."

She took the bag from him and sat on the bed, trying to remember what was inside. As she unzipped it, a thick envelope and a few documents fell onto her lap.

James sat beside her as she picked up the first paper. Her eyes widened. "This… this is my father's will."

James leaned closer. "Your father's will?"

Charlotte's hands trembled as she read through the documents. It stated, without a doubt, that she was the rightful owner of Charlotte Corporation—the company her father had built in her name. But what shocked her the most was the realization that the company had never been in financial trouble.

Her stepmother had lied.

Charlotte's breath hitched as she picked up a folded letter, addressed to her in her father's handwriting.

The Letter That Changed Everything

She unfolded the paper carefully, her heart pounding as she read:

My dearest Charlotte,

If you are reading this, it means I am no longer here. There are things you must know, things I could never tell you while I was alive. I trusted the wrong people, and I fear that my time is running out. Janet… she is not who she pretends to be. If anything happens to me, know that it was not an accident. She will try to control you, to take what is yours, but you must not let her. You are stronger than you realize.

I love you, my sweet girl. Never forget that.

Your father, Liam Michael

Charlotte's vision blurred with tears as the truth sank in. Her stepmother had murdered her father.

She clutched the letter to her chest, sobbing as the weight of the revelation crashed over her.

James's Comfort

James, who had been silently reading over her shoulder, felt his entire body tense with anger. He wrapped his arms around Charlotte, pulling her against his chest.

"I'm so sorry," he murmured, stroking her hair as she cried. "I can't believe she did this to you."

Charlotte choked out between sobs, "I… I never knew. I had this bag for years, and I never thought to check what was inside."

James kissed the top of her head, his grip tightening. "She took everything from you, but she won't get away with it. I swear."

Charlotte buried her face in his shoulder, her tears soaking into his shirt. She had lived so many years believing she was powerless, but now she held the truth in her hands.

And she knew—this wasn't the end.

It was just the beginning.
