Prologue:



In the East is a land ruled by an emperor, whose consorts and serving women live in a sprawling complex known as the Neigong or Hougong, the inner or rear palace.



Maomao and Ying Yue, an unassuming pair of sisters raised in an unassuming town by their apothecary father, never imagined the rear palace would have anything to do with them—until they werre kidnapped and sold into service there.



Though she looks ordinary, Maomao has a quick wit, a sharp mind and her oler sister, YingYue is a high-ranked prostitute but she just plays musical instruments, dances and plays Go and Shogi with guests.



But there is one thing, that is she never "sleeps over" with men.



Unlike Maomao, she is a person who is always calm and gentle but also has a quick and sharp mind like her little sister. The sisters both had extensive knowledge of medicine since they was raised by an apothecary father.



That’s their secret, until they encounters a resident of the palace at least as perceptive as she is: the head eunuch, Jinshi.



He sees through the twin’s façades and makes them ladies-in-waiting to none other than the Emperor’s favorite consort… so they can taste the lady’s food for poison!



At their lady’s side, Maomao starts to learn about everything that goes on in the rear palace—not all of it seemly. Can she ever lead a quiet life, or will her powers of deduction and insatiable curiosity bring her ever more adventures, and ever more dangers?
