When we came back to the apartment, it seemed to have grown even quieter than before. But, in all honesty, it probably only seemed like that. When we left the apartment, we were actively talking. Now, for the last 5 minutes, neither of us said anything. While I was overflowing with the desire to open the book and dive deep into its wisdom, Felix began to press her lips against each other and make a few sounds. She later on explained to me that it was called "humming", but I didn't know that at that point. All I did know was that she did it, and that it was kind of pleasant for my ears.
I entered my dim and plain room, closed the door, even locked the door, something I hadn't done in a very long time, and sat myself on my bed. Felix was still floating beside me and now eagerly watched over my shoulder, waiting for my to open the book and reveal it's doctrines.
And just as she silently demanded it I had already decided to act myself. I slowly opened it.
The book contained a variety of chapters. It's structure was pretty simple; Each chapter talked about a variety of emotions. When talking about emotions it first gave you the definition, then a description, then multiple situation in which you could experience the emotion, then a direct example with a quote, then the next emotion came. Some articles had pictures, but most didn't.
'Happiness'
'The feeling of simply feeling good. Any kind of suffering is absent most of the time. It appears often through an action called laughing. It can be classified as the opposite of "Sadness". Instead, there is a feeling of satisfaction. It is a positive emotional state which can be categorized into many sub-categories which will follow shortly after. Happiness is one of the strongest emotions one can experience.'
'You could experience happiness after finishing a task you took a long time to accomplish. (For more information look at "Satisfaction".)'
'You could experience happiness after seeing that your life is holding a bright future, therefore being happy because something good will happen. (For more information look at "Anticipation".)'
'You could experience happiness through experiencing particularly fun and positive events in your life. (For more information look at "Joy".)'
'"After I won the championship I have felt an incredible amount of happiness."'
"So this is the feeling you are feeling?"
"Ye, sure is. But it kinda difficult to explain, ya see?"
"Yeah, after all this goes on for like 50 pages which all go into detail regarding other types of happiness."
"More like different versions of happiness, bud. After all, happiness ain't easy to explain, huh."
That is something I have witnessed a lot of times with this book. I thought it would easily tell me everything about emotions I needed to know. I though I would be able to understand everything more clearly after reading it. But after skimming through it I realized that there wasn't as much information as I had expected. It seemed as though emotions really weren't as easily explained as I had hoped.
"This isn't as much information as I hoped."
"Well, emotions are kinda complicated, ya know? How you gon describe colors without using colors, huh? It just complicated. Ya gotta experience it yaself, bud."
"It appears you are correct. But this book can at least give me some directions regarding where to look for emotions."
"It appears so, ye. So, this it? We stole the book for a bit of info and nothin more?"
"It... appears so."
"Sure, why not? Ion care either way."
I skimmed through the pages some more. Then I found another entry which, similarly to happiness, was only the start of a giant chapter dedicated to it.
'Sadness'
'The feeling of feeling bad. It is a negative emotion, describable through a great number of different sub-emotions. Generally speaking, you feel it when feeling alone, worthless, when you regret something or simply hate yourself. It appears often through an action called crying. It is the opposite of happiness. Sadness is one of the strongest emotions you can experience.'
'You can experience sadness when regretting a past action you have done very deeply. (For more information look at "Regret".)'
'You can experience sadness when mourning a loved ones passing away. (For more information look at "Grief.")'
'You can experience sadness when feeling lonely and unloved. (For more information look at "Loneliness".)'
'"After my mother died I felt a sadness which was stronger than everything else I have every experienced."
Huh. That was odd.
"This one says that sadness is even stronger than everything else."
"I dunno. Maybe. Not like I feel sadness."
"But wasn't that your plan as well?"
"Ye, it was. Through killing myself, at least someone should've felt some sadness. My fam probably did."
"So your family is feeling that great sadness right now?"
"You was there, wasn't ya? Ya said yaself that everythin kinda strange. I guess that was sadness."
"I want that too."
"Ya want sadness?"
"I want the strongest of emotions. And if sadness is the strongest one, then I want to be sad."
And so it was decided.
