The 0.1 Ability

I clicked the button, my hand moving mechanically, like a puppet attached to invisible strings. It was the only thing I knew how to do now—click and let the cycle repeat. The fog around me thickened, my breaths shallow as the screen flickered in front of me, its pale light casting an eerie glow on my surroundings.

*Updating system...*

The words flashed by faster than I could read them, but I didn't care anymore. What was another update? What was another loop, another death, another meaningless rebirth? The screen blinked again, this time staying still long enough for me to focus on it.

*Welcome back, Kai. You have been granted 0.1 ability: "Unseen Step."*

I stared at the words, the confusion cutting through the fog in my brain like a dull knife. *0.1 ability?*

I read it again, and then a third time, but it didn't make any more sense. *What the hell is "Unseen Step"?*

There was no explanation. No details. Just the chilling message, and that was it.

My fingers twitched with frustration, but the overwhelming numbness that had taken hold of me since my first death set in. I wasn't angry. I wasn't scared. I was… nothing. I was nothing but the echo of someone who had once had hope.

*Unseen Step.*

It sounded like something that could be useful, but then again, in a world where I couldn't even escape the loop, what use was anything?

The wind picked up around me, the trees groaning as their branches swayed. The forest was alive, or at least, it felt alive. A subtle sense of menace hung in the air, as if the forest was waiting for something to happen.

I needed to move. I needed to figure out what "Unseen Step" was. Maybe it was something I could use to finally break free. Maybe it would give me the power to run, to escape from this damned place.

*Try it.*

The thought wasn't my own, but it felt real—like an instinctual urge pushing me forward. Without thinking, I willed myself to move, to take a step forward.

The moment my foot touched the ground, a strange sensation washed over me. It was like I wasn't there—like I had become a shadow, slipping through the cracks of reality. The air around me seemed to ripple as if I was somehow blending with the environment, becoming one with the fog and trees.

I tried to take another step, but the sensation of being "unseen" was overwhelming. I couldn't tell if I was moving or if the world was moving around me. It was like walking in a dream, the boundaries between what was real and what wasn't blurring with every second.

I hesitated. This ability… it was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. But how did it work? Did it make me invisible? Did it make me intangible?

I took a deep breath and pushed myself further into the forest, testing the limits of this strange power. With each step, I felt myself blend more and more into the world around me, my presence fading into the mist.

I felt no fear. I wasn't even sure if I was still Kai, the person I had once been, the person who had a family, a future. I was something else now. Something broken. A shadow in a world of shadows.

I pushed forward, my heart pounding with a strange mixture of curiosity and dread. The trees around me loomed like silent giants, and the fog swirled, hiding the ground from view. I could see the forest floor through the mist, but it felt so distant, so far away. The whole world felt distant.

Then I heard it—the growl. The same growl that had haunted me for who knows how many loops. My heart skipped a beat, but this time, I didn't feel the old panic. Instead, I felt… calm. Almost detached.

*Is this it?* I thought. *Is this my chance?*

The growl grew louder, closer, but I wasn't afraid anymore. I wasn't worried. I couldn't feel fear. I was numb, and yet, I was still moving forward. This "Unseen Step" ability made me feel as though I wasn't even part of the world anymore. Maybe that was the point. Maybe I was meant to become so detached that nothing could hurt me.

I glanced to the side, watching the creature emerge from the fog—a massive, hulking figure with glowing eyes, its mouth twisted into a cruel snarl. It was the same monster I had encountered countless times before, the one that had ended my life each time.

But this time… it didn't seem to notice me. It wandered past me, sniffing the air, but I was already gone, lost in the shadows of the forest.

*I can't be seen.* The thought hit me like a punch to the chest. I had escaped it. For the first time, I wasn't going to die.

I kept moving, blending into the environment, the trees, the mist, until the beast was nothing but a faint noise in the distance. My heart still pounded in my chest, but it was different now. The fear was gone, replaced with something colder.

*I did it. I escaped.*

But then… it wasn't the escape I thought it would be.

I stopped walking, staring into the distance. The forest stretched out before me, endless and dark, with no way to tell which way was the right way. There was no path. No sign.

I was free, but I was still lost.

A wave of dizziness hit me, and for a moment, I felt like I might fall into the mist and never come back.

But I didn't. I stayed standing, swaying slightly. I glanced at the system screen again, the words still there, blinking.

*0.1 ability: Unseen Step – Limited usage.*

I furrowed my brow, staring at the words. *Limited usage?*

What did that mean? How long could I use this ability before it stopped working?

And why did it feel so… hollow?

I realized with a growing sense of dread that the loop hadn't ended. I wasn't free.

*I was still trapped.*

The system had given me something new, something that felt like it could be the key to escaping the endless cycle, but it didn't change the fact that I was still stuck. No matter what abilities I had, no matter how many times I "escaped," the loop would always pull me back.

I closed my eyes, letting the fog swallow me. The system had given me something, but it hadn't given me the answer I was searching for.

And I didn't know if I was ready to face the truth.
