Karlos saw her staring at him, raised an eyebrow, and asked, "Do you need help?"
Berlin suddenly blushed and said, "No!"
The door was immediately shut and locked. Karlos curled his lips, feeling amused. A few minutes later, Berlin walked out, unable to look at him.
As she ignored him, she imagined all the dirty deeds he might have done with Tasha, when they stepped out together. Her train of thoughts came to a halt as the door to the room opened.
"Hi, I'm back. Why are you up?" It was a happy voice that sounded a bit surprised.
She turned her head and saw Mrs. Lydia holding two dinner packs.
"The doctor said you need to rest." She said putting the food down.
"Son, I brought you some food and a change of clothes for you." Mrs. Lydia said to him as she pointed at the bag.
"Thank you, Mom." Karlos replied as he took the bag and walked into the washroom.
Mrs. Lydia set the dinner packs on the table. And began talking about how she conquered her husband's heart with her cooking skills. Berlin showed great interest and raised questions from time to time.
Ten minutes later, Karlos returned to the room. He was wearing something casual. A gray v-neck cotton T-shirt and white pant that made him look tall and handsome.
Right now he wasn't looking the part of a wealthy CEO but he looked like a young university student. There seemed to be some brightness in his eyes. He pursed his lips and walked up to her.
Knock! Knock!
The surface of the door was knocked and pushed opened.
The moment she stepped inside, everyone landed their eyes on her.
Standing at the door was Prissy in a pink dress and a pink sneakers to match. She looked cute even though she seemed a bit crestfallen with her eyes red and a shy smile, as if she did not deserve to be among them.
"Ber...lin... I- I brought you some bouquet and fruits." Prissy struggled to let out her words. she came over to stand beside her mother, placing the flowers and fruits down.
"Umm...Thank you" Berlin looked at her in a confused manner, noticing the certain change in her character and demeanor.
'That was unlike her.' she thought as she subconsciously, glance at Karlos. His face was calm as always. The moment he saw his sister's odd behavior, he frowned and looked at Berlin. Their eyes were locked for a moment.
Mrs. Lydia had arrived with her daughter but she had refused to come in with her, she wanted to spend alone time with herself and muster enough courage.
Prissy still couldn't look into Berlin's eyes, knowing the things she did to her. A good relationship never existed between them to begin with.
"H-Hello, what's up brother?" she asked while her free hand moved up to tuck a lose hair strand behind her ear.
In as much as she tried to act normal, he could tell from her shaky voice that everything was not alright.
"What's the matter, Prissy?" Karlos asked feeling worried about her.
"It is nothing. I am fine, Why?"
"Your voice sounds off for a reason. I cannot pinpoint. Did anything happen to you?"
"No," she lied to him but that was because she had no idea how she was going to tell him that she had a break down, a renewal of mind and the Berlin's predicament had gotten to her.
"Is it because you feel sad and sorry for what happened with the accident?" On the first guess, Karlos already found her out.
'Dammit!' Prissy cursed as she bit down on her lower lip. She hated the fact that he could easily read her even when she was faking something.
"Umm, well I-I am unhappy about your injury, Berlin. I hope you get well soon..."
Berlin couldn't help herself but slightly be touched. She suddenly understood why she was acting this way.
Prissy and her brother, Karlos, lost their father in an accident five years ago. And after that accident, Prissy became depressed blaming herself and attempted suicide a few times until she went through therapy whereas Karlos drowned himself into working endlessly.
It was hard for the family to cope back then.
In her previous lifetime, Prissy had done so many nasty things to her. She rained insults, ridiculed her, and she had been upset with the way she was treated. A powerless girl who was looked down because of where she had come from.
Even though she was her husband's sister, her name was on her revenge list.
But it was hard to feel indifferent towards a person trying to turn over a new leaf.
She was angry, hurt, and most of all uncertain of how real or true the change was. But she wasn't going to let her guard down.
Berlin nodded her reply to Prissy and just to show her, she was grateful for her concern.
"Enough of the chit chat. Your meal is getting cold." As soon as Mrs. Lydia said those words, Berlin's stomach growled.
The room fell silent.
"I think I 'm hungry." Berlin said sheepishly.
She wanted to eat when she had awakened, because she didn't eat anything in the morning and she had waited on the doctor's instructions.
Mrs. Lydia took off the lid.
"Smells so good." Berlin could immediately tell by her nose that her mother-in-law had made it herself. She had had the opportunity to taste it a few times in her previous lifetime and was of course able to recognize right away.
Mrs. Lydia was overjoyed to hear her comment and fetched a spoonful of soup and fed her. "How is it?"
She gulped down the chicken soup and gave a thumbs up. "It is delicious."
He did not know why he was watching her like this. He found himself enjoying the look of excitement on her face at the food. However, Prissy was completely quiet and stared at Berlin with a Serene expression.
"That reminds me, the doctor said you have a frail body. The shock of the incident was too much for your body to bear, so he prescribed this medication. You should add it to the food when eating." she said handing the pill to Karlos to have a look.
"I think I'm losing my appetite." Berlin looked at Mrs. Lydia awkwardly.
She hated the sight of medicine and pills.
Back when her Mom was alive, seeing her mother's pale complexion, and the pointlessness of taking the drugs, she would repeatedly feel unwell. And the continuous presence of medicines around her, made her stomach turn. Even when she was sick, she didn't desire to take them. She didn't even say she was falling ill. She just resulted to taking natural herbs.
"But my dear You need to regain your health. How can You regain it if you don't take your medications?" Mrs. Lydia said worriedly. "I wouldn't be glad if you don't recover." She was making a pleading face.
"But...Mom..." Berlin was about to say I am not in the mood to take in any medicine when Karlos interjected.
"Leave the medicine to me. I will make sure she takes it." Karlos said.
Mrs. Lydia looked at her son and Berlin alternately and then smiled.
"Ohhh. Okay Prissy and I will take our leave we will be back again. We need to visit the Weasels, Please make sure she takes it. She held her daughter's hand and they both left.
He watched how she had spoken to his mother.
Observing how weak but pure her resilience was, his chest felt numb.
He is not a very emotional person by nature. And he is not very caring either. He wanted to leave it to his Mom but he couldn't seem to hold himself back from helping her.
Karlos looked at Berlin seriously. He took the spoon beside the bowl, fetched the soup and added the medicine into the soup. He blew the steam away from the spoon and served it to her.
"Open your mouth." Karlos commanded.
"No" she spoke faintly, and turned her face away, refusing to eat.
He sighed heavily. He knows what is happening to her and how she was feeling. Because he used to feel the same way when it was hard for food to go down his throat after the funeral. Even after taking the medicines for indigestion, he still felt nauseous, writhing in pain and at times, would end up throwing everything out of his system, including the medicine.
He shook that memory off and concentrated on the woman in front of him. He drank a mouthful of soup, held her in his arms, grabbing her cheeks. He leaned down and sealed his lips with hers before pushing the soup into her mouth.
She placed her hands on his chest and tried to push him away but he held her in place and continued feeding the medicine to her. He slid his tongue inside and the taste of the medicine and him made all rational thoughts leave her mind.
All she wanted was to push him away for hurting her feelings, after scolding herself on numerous occasions, and about the alarm bells ringing in her head to stay hundred miles away from him and yet still, she wanted him but she did what she had to do, take the medicine, so he will leave her alone.
He repeated it until she finished up the soup in the bowl.
But the kissing wasn't.
