Chapter 2: The Art of Not Dying Horribly

Neo-Babylon – Backstreets

Kai Vance knew two things for certain.

1. The cybernetic enforcer in front of him, Valkyrie, was absolutely going to kill him.

2. He was completely outmatched.

Her monomolecular vibro-sword hummed with a low, deadly frequency, the edge sharp enough to slice through solid steel like butter.

Kai swallowed hard. "So, on a scale of 'slap on the wrist' to 'mutilated beyond recognition,' how badly do you plan to kill me?"

Valkyrie didn't even blink. "Surrender now, and I will ensure a painless extraction."

Kai let out a slow breath. "Yeah, see, 'extraction' sounds like a fancy way of saying 'brain surgery without anesthesia.' So, hard pass."

She moved.

Too fast.

Kai barely twisted out of the way as her blade sliced through the air, missing his throat by an inch.

"Holy shit—!"

Valkyrie pressed forward, no wasted motion, no hesitation. She was a machine of efficiency. Every strike was precise, designed to kill.

Kai dodged and weaved, but he was losing ground fast.

He needed an opening.

Improvisation – The Key to Not Dying

His eyes darted around. A broken neon sign. A leaking fuel pipe. A loose power cable.

That'll do.

Kai backpedaled toward the power cable, keeping Valkyrie focused on him. She lunged.

At the last second, Kai grabbed the loose cable and yanked it free.

Sparks exploded.

He swung it like a makeshift whip, sending a surge of electricity straight at Valkyrie's sword.

Her blade, made of a hyper-conductive alloy, acted as a perfect lightning rod.

Electricity surged through her cybernetic systems.

For the first time, she faltered.

Kai didn't waste time. He spun and kicked her square in the chest.

Valkyrie staggered back, her systems momentarily overloaded.

"Okay, cool. That worked. Time to leave."

Kai turned to run—

And a gunshot rang out.

Pain erupted in his shoulder.

He barely had time to register the impact before his body collapsed against the pavement.

Captured – A Very Bad Day

His vision blurred as Valkyrie approached, her silver eyes cold and assessing.

She holstered her smoking pistol.

"You're valuable," she murmured. "They want you alive. Lucky you."

Kai tried to move. His limbs weren't listening.

Before the darkness swallowed him, he heard her voice one last time.

"Welcome to Titan Industries."
