Logan's words made Skyler’s blood freeze.
Her mind went blank for two seconds before she forced herself to answer.
“No… I cleaned up the kitchen last night and went to bed. Why? Did something happen upstairs?”
Logan didn’t respond immediately.
The silence stretched so long that Skyler kept her head down, afraid to see his expression.
The pain on both sides of her face had already numbed, but she still felt lightheaded from the lack of oxygen.
Then, a cold, low voice came from above her.
“No.”
“But remember, the second floor is not for you. If I ever catch you sneaking up there, you’d better get out of here.”
With that, the door slammed shut in front of her.
This time, Logan had really left.
“Phew…” Skyler let out a shaky breath, her whole body going limp.
Just now, her heart had almost jumped out of her chest.
Luckily, she hadn’t given herself away.
Just then, her phone rang.
“Hey, Skyler, how’s that 200,000 coming along? Don’t blame me for not warning you, but my mom just made a deal with the pawnshop. If you don’t come up with the money before six o’clock this evening, the ring will be gone.”
It was Isabella.
Skyler frowned. “I’m still trying to raise the money. 200,000 is just too much. Isabella, can’t you talk to your aunt and—”
“No way! What’s our relationship? Do you really think I’d help you just because you used to be my spoiled little cousin?”
“I’m telling you, two hundred thousand, not a penny less! The moment six o’clock hits, my mom will take the ring to the pawnshop. Take it or leave it!”
With a snap, Isabella hung up.
Skyler’s temples throbbed.
She wanted to forget about the ring, but something inside her told her she couldn’t.
She thought and thought.
She didn’t want to bother the Clark siblings again, so she tried borrowing money from people she used to know.
But the results were disappointing.
“Get lost! Our boss isn’t in the country. If you want to borrow money, go somewhere else. We don’t do charity here!”
This was already the umpteenth time Skyler had been ruthlessly kicked out of a company.
This time, the person she asked was rough.
They pushed her so hard that she stumbled and fell down several steps.
“Ah!”
She fell straight down, her forehead slamming into the handrail.
Her vision blurred, and warm blood trickled down her face.
“It’s not my fault! You didn’t stand properly!”
The security guard who had kicked her out panicked and quickly left.
Skyler sprained her ankle and lay on the steps for a long time, unable to get up.
Finally, after the dizziness subsided, she endured the pain and used the handrail to stand.
It was almost six o’clock, and she still didn’t have enough money.
Just then, her phone vibrated.
Skyler picked it up and saw a bank notification pop up on the screen.
Her account had just received a deposit of 200,000 yuan.
Skyler: !!!
Two hundred thousand!
Who sent her this money?
Just then, her phone rang.
“Hey, Skyler, did the transfer go through?”
Skyler’s heart skipped a beat.
“Xiao Bo… No, Grandpa… Was it you?”
She gripped her phone tightly, hardly able to believe it.
“Yes, it was me. Why didn’t you tell Grandpa if you needed money? If it weren’t for Elijah overhearing someone talking about you needing money, I wouldn’t have even known that my grandson’s wife was borrowing money from outsiders.”
“No… That’s not it, Grandpa. I wasn’t borrowing money—I was raising investments,” Skyler quickly explained, coming up with an excuse. She couldn’t let the old man get suspicious.
“Investments?” Old Master Wilson chuckled. “If you need money for business, you should’ve come to me first. My grandson’s wife doesn’t need to rely on outsiders. Consider this 200,000 as Grandpa’s support.”
“But, Grandpa, I can’t take your money. I’ll transfer it back to you right now,” Skyler said.
Old Master Wilson cut her off.
“No, you won’t. Just take it.”
Skyler was about to argue when the old man suddenly said, “Alright then, if you don’t want my money, I’ll call Logan and ask him how he’s been taking care of his wife. He didn’t even give you a black card and made you borrow money from others? That makes me so angry! I have to talk to him about this!”
Skyler’s heart nearly jumped out of her throat.
She couldn’t let Logan find out.
The cold, disdainful look he had given her before leaving that morning was still fresh in her mind.
She couldn’t let him underestimate her.
“Please, Grandpa… Don’t call Logan,” Skyler pleaded. “I’ll take the money. Just don’t disturb him at work.”
In the end, she obediently accepted the 200,000 yuan but insisted it was just a loan. She promised to pay it back in installments once she received her salary.
Old Master Wilson eventually agreed and promised not to tell Logan.
But the moment he hung up the phone, his smile faded.
At the sanatorium, his face turned cold.
“Elijah,” he called out to his most trusted subordinate.
Elijah stepped forward. “Yes, sir?”
“You’re sure you saw Skyler pleading with someone today, not discussing business?”
Old Master Wilson’s voice was deep and serious.
In truth, he had tricked Skyler.
Elijah had seen her getting kicked out of a company earlier that day.
To spare her dignity, the old man had acted like he didn’t know.
“Yes, sir. I saw Young Madam being kicked out of a construction company today. I even asked the person in charge. They said she was there to borrow money,” Elijah reported.
