After the preparations were complete, Elias and Chase stood side by side next to my corpse. Their expressions were solemn as they bowed respectfully.
This was the first time I'd seen Elias at work, and the first time I realized he was gentler with corpses than he was with me. To think I'd been fooling myself all this time, believing his cold nature was just how he was.
It turns out it was simply because he didn't love me.
I felt so bitter!
But Elias was already immersed in his work. Even when Chase couldn't stand my smell and went out for fresh air, he didn't stop. He quickly restored my legs, torso, and arms.
Only when just the head remained did Elias finally let out a long sigh of relief, straightening up to stretch his stiff muscles.
He leaned against the hallway wall with an unreadable expression. Chase asked him, "Did it affect you?"
Elias didn't respond. Only when he put his mask back on to return did he say quietly, "I just think it's a bit tragic."
For someone who sees corpses every day to find my situation tragic - I scoffed. Now I was even more eager to see his reaction later.
Elias meticulously performed the filling, pressing, and trimming motions. My face gradually took shape. His skill was truly exceptional; my face, which had been unrecognizable before, now bore some resemblance to how I looked when alive. After carefully examining my face, Elias stared intently, his expression becoming somewhat dazed. He turned to Chase beside him and asked, "Does this face look familiar to you?"
The man glanced over and let out a whistle. "You know, now that you mention it, it does look a bit like..."
He hesitated, his gaze fixed on Elias's face. "Don't get mad, but I think this face looks a bit like... like your wife."
He fell silent after speaking, watching Elias, who just furrowed his brow and stood up.
"It's probably just a coincidence. Melody's life isn't worth much. Who would go to all this trouble to kill her?"
Chase couldn't respond to that, so he just went along with Elias's reasoning to comfort him. "It must be a coincidence. Your wife hardly ever leaves the house. How could anything happen to her?"
As they spoke, they covered my body with a white cloth and called for someone to take me to be cremated.
Perhaps the striking resemblance had unsettled Elias's thoughts. After my body was taken away, he quickly followed suit and left.
On the drive, he nearly crashed into the guardrail several times.
Finally, he pulled over to the side of the road and picked up his phone to call Aria.
"Aria, is Melody... at home?Betrayed by his question, Aria pretended to be jealous and huffed, "The first thing you ask about is Melody. Are you worried I'm going to eat her or something?"
As Elias frantically tried to explain, she laughed and said, "Relax, I'm just teasing you. Melody's your darling, of course you're concerned about her. How could I possibly be jealous?"
"Don't worry, she was right beside me just a moment ago. She's probably out shopping now."
Aria lied smoothly, and Elias, who trusted her implicitly, was put at ease. After a few more reassuring words, he hung up the phone and turned his car into the mall parking lot.
Watching the direction he went, I remembered how before we were married, when I wanted that one-of-a-kind ring, Elias had berated me in public.
"It's just a marketing gimmick, designed to fool gullible people like you."
The store clerk's face had darkened at his words, and I felt even more humiliated under their stares. It was like being doused with ice water on a chilly spring day - I felt cold from head to toe.
That was the first time I realized I might just be a stand-in for Aria. Elias didn't love me.
