Edge of Ruin

The facility trembled violently, sending sheets of sparks cascading from the ceiling. Marcus pulled himself upright, his muscles screaming in protest. The Ghost lay sprawled against the wall, blood trickling from his temple—but Marcus knew better than to assume he was out of the fight.

"Emily! Status!" Marcus shouted.

"Almost there!" she called back, her fingers a blur on the keyboard. The ominous black box was now wired directly into the control panel, but the system fought her every step of the way.

01:45… 01:44…

The countdown's relentless march continued.

"You need to hurry!" Marcus urged.

"Don't you think I know that?" Emily snapped, frustration clear in her voice. "The core's defenses are more advanced than we thought—I'm bypassing the last firewall now."

A low, dangerous laugh filled the room.

"You still don't get it," the Ghost rasped, slowly rising to his feet. "This isn't just a system shutdown. You stop the countdown—you wake up something worse."

Marcus's stomach dropped. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"Ask yourself," the Ghost whispered, eyes gleaming. "Why bury a weapon this deep? Why build so many failsafes?"

01:15… 01:14…

"Marcus!" Emily's voice was full of both triumph and terror. "I'm in—but there's something here. Another protocol—"

Before she could finish, the control panel flared to life. A new message flashed across the screen:

ACTIVATION OVERRIDE: REJECTED SECONDARY SYSTEMS ENGAGED

"Secondary systems?" Marcus echoed, his voice barely above a whisper.

The Ghost's smile was chilling. "The real reckoning begins now."

Suddenly, the entire facility shifted, the floor tilting beneath them. From deep below, a sound rose—a low, grinding noise, like something massive being awakened.

00:45… 00:44…

"Marcus, we need to get out of here!" Emily shouted.

"Not without answers," he shot back. He grabbed the Ghost by the collar, dragging him upright. "What's waking up?"

"You'll see soon enough," the Ghost whispered.

The floor buckled.

00:30… 00:29…

"Emily, go!" Marcus ordered. "Get to the exit—"

But before either of them could move, the wall behind them exploded inward.

And something stepped through the smoke.

Something that shouldn't exist.
