Shelly is an elf—someone who shouldn't have been growing up here.
Caleb and Cecily found the girl in the small vegetable box when they used to work as farmers.
At that time, Cecily recently had a miscarriage and had lost her ability to bear a child.
The duo was quite depressed at that time because they neither had any family members and also had lost the hope of having a child.
Maybe because their souls were wounded, they didn't think twice before bringing the girl to the house.
Shelly was only three years old—or what she appeared in their eyes. However, since the elves grew significantly slow during the initial few years, they later found out that she was already fifteen years old.
They were quite shaken, thinking that they had kidnapped the girl rather than adopted her. And considering the strict rules toward the other races, the married couple thought that they might get imprisoned for life for their impulsive decision.
…however, Shelly never blamed them nor she showed any intention of going back to her home. Although she didn't reveal what the reason was, the emotions in her eyes clearly told that she was extremely hateful toward her real parents.
As such, after that, Cecily and Caleb became her official parents.
Until now, they never regretted adopting the girl. Shelly was the color that painted their colorless life and gave them a reason to smile…to live.
They adored Shelly, as much as she adored them.
Their life was going well until now. Through a few connections, they got a job at one of the five biggest clans of the human race, and their wages were hefty enough to allow them three meals a day.
However, everything came crashing down one day, when suddenly someone took Shelly away from them and told the couple to kidnap the young master of the Ravenshade clan.
They were told that if they wanted to see their daughter again then they had to kill the son of that man who gave them respect and welcomed them as a family in their house.
Lord Ravenshade might be infamous for several things, but when it comes to his people and his family, he becomes a gentle person.
However, they had to betray the man's trust to protect the one they adore.
Caleb and Cecily already assumed that their life was finished since they didn't have the courage to harm the young master. And because of their cowardice, the little one…the innocent Shelly would suffer as well.
They were met by a dead end and no one was there to help them.
It was then that help arrived from an unexpected face.
"I have a plan. Neither you two nor your daughter would get harmed if you follow what I am saying." They couldn't believe that the same person who fooled around the whole day, and barely cared about those who were beneath him was actually showing concern for the duo.
The same young master, whom they think would kill them the moment he wakes up, rather suggested a plan that gave them the hope that neither they would lose their daughter, nor Shelly would become an orphan.
"*Hic* How can you…even think of sacrificing yourself for me…' Hugging the duo, Shelly wept.
She heard everything that happened from her father and was quite sad to hear that they were even considering letting themselves get sacrificed for her safety.
While slowly stroking the little one's head, Cecily spoke, "You won't understand it now, Shelly…parents are all like that. They can fight anyone in the world, for their children."
Caleb also added, "Nothing matters more to us than your safety and that was something we decided the moment we adopted you."
Shelly remained silent; however, inside her head, several things were swirling.
And the person who occupied most of her thoughts was the same person she disliked the most in the past.
'Young master, Carlisle…thank you….'

The next morning, early in the morning, as Caleb and Cecily were preparing to resume their work in the mansion, they heard a knock on the door.
"Ah, Miss Maria." It was the green-haired head maid of the house who unexpectedly appeared before them.
Maria's emerald gaze traveled to their attire before she said, "Madam Anna said that you two can take a couple of days of rest." Her plain voice made it seem she was just here to relay the message.
Caleb and Cecily glanced at each other before the man said, "Staying in the room would keep reminding us of yesterday, so it's better if we keep ourselves busy."
Maria shrugged, "Your wish but don't overdo it."
The duo smiled at that. Even though it seems Maria doesn't care about them or anyone else, she actually does.
"Umm…Aunt Maria, can I meet the young master by any chance?" Suddenly a fourth person voiced, timidly peeking from behind her father.
Maria's brows elevated as she said, "I came to inform you about it. Young Master Carl actually has summoned you to the library. Alone."
Shelly's eyes widened slightly as she took a strong gulp in fret.
Cecily knelt before her daughter, resting her hand on her daughter's small head, she said, "Don't be afraid, love. Young Master is not a bad person.'
Although there still was some hesitation in her eyes, the girl nodded, "Mm."
Once her parents left, she followed the head maid who was leading her to the library.
"Young Master might seem fine but don't mention anything about yesterday." Maria reminded the girl.
With her head leaning down, Shelly responded, "I understand."
Maria gave a few more instructions to the young girl before they finally reached the library.
*Click*
Maria opened the doors, and said, "Now, go inside."
Taking a deep breath, the small elf nodded before she stepped inside.
