After taking the child with them, intending to return to the surface and escape the maze, they followed the same path they had come from.
When they reached one of the trees in the forest, a bird with shiny silver feathers stopped them, staring only at the child.
The others watched the bird in amazement, especially the guards, wondering how they had missed such a creature during their exploration.
As they gazed at it, the guards felt a sudden dizziness, but they brushed it off, thinking they were just tired from the journey.
They continued walking, noticing the same plants they had passed earlier until they arrived at the same tree where the bird still perched, its eyes fixed on the child.
The group exchanged puzzled glances but pressed on.
The surroundings remained unchanged, as if they were trapped in a never-ending loop.
On the third round, anxiety started to show on Steven and Dom's faces, though the guards tried to reassure them.
Inside, however, they were just as confused. On the fourth attempt, Dom found a spiral shell on the ground.
As soon as he picked it up, a faint sound came from within. Curious, he brought it closer to his ear, only to fall into a trance — standing still, eyes wide open, lifeless, yet still breathing.
Panic struck the group. Steven, being the closest, quickly grabbed the shell from Dom's hand and threw it away, but Dom remained unresponsive. The tension grew heavier.
Jack carried Dom on his back, relying on his great endurance, and they moved on.
This time, they agreed that when they encountered the strange bird again, they would kill it, suspecting it was the cause of their ordeal and the guards' earlier dizziness.
When they reached the tree once more, the bird was still there. Kuro, the fastest and most agile among them, leaped forward to strike the bird with his dagger.
The bird dodged with incredible grace and swiftly attacked Dom, still on Jack's back. Jack, though strong, couldn't react in time. The bird's razor-sharp wing sliced through Dom's neck, sending his head rolling to the ground.
In the heat of the moment, Izem seized the opportunity and delivered a deadly strike with his sword, cutting down the bird.
As the creature fell lifeless into its own blood, the illusion trapping them vanished. Yet, sorrow filled the air. They had lost a comrade, and even the guards felt they had failed their mission.
Kuro broke the silence, saying, "The mission isn't over. We still need to reach the surface and—"
Jack cut him off, rage clear in his voice. "What mission? We failed the moment we decided to take this cursed child with us! It's his fault. He's the reason for all this!"
Izem tried to calm him. "Easy, my friend. Anger won't help us now. How could the child be the cause of this?"
Steven, unable to stay silent, spoke in a deep, calm tone. "Jack, if you want to curse something, curse your own weakness. Now let's move."
Despite everything, the child's face showed no emotion, as if he wasn't the same boy who had been crying moments ago.
The group walked in silence, the weight of loss and fear hanging heavy over them.
Suddenly, Jack stopped, staring at the child. His gaze darkened, filled with murderous intent. Slowly, he drew his massive sword from his back, his movements irrational as if controlled by an unseen force.
Kuro and Izem tried to reason with him, believing his rage was clouding his judgment. But Jack didn't hear them. Without warning, he swung his sword at the child, aiming to kill. The child barely managed to dodge and ran off, terrified, never looking back. Jack chased after him, forcing the rest of the group to follow, trying desperately to stop Jack and bring them both back as they ventured deeper into the forest.
