Chapter 22: Unexpected guest

As Alex and I continued our stroll, hand in hand, we suddenly heard the sound of laughter and chatter. We turned a corner and found ourselves face to face with Rachel and Jake.

Rachel's eyes widened in surprise as she took in the sight of Alex and me holding hands. "Oh. My. Gosh," she exclaimed, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.

Jake, on the other hand, looked less than thrilled. His eyes narrowed, and he crossed his arms over his chest. "What's going on here?" he asked, his tone dripping with skepticism.

Alex squeezed my hand reassuringly. "Just taking a walk," he said, his voice calm and steady.

Rachel's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Ooh, I love walks! Especially when they involve cute couples."

Jake shot Rachel a warning look. "Rach, come on."

But Rachel was undeterred. "What? I'm just stating the obvious. Alex and" – she nodded toward me – "are totally meant to be."

I felt my face heat up with embarrassment, but Alex just chuckled. "Thanks, Rachel."

As we stood there, an awkward silence fell over the group. Jake looked like he was about to say something, but then seemed to think better of it.

Finally, Rachel broke the silence. "Hey, we were just heading to the movies. Want to join us?"

Alex looked at me, and I shrugged. "Sure, why not?"

As we walked to the movie theater together, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Jake's attitude toward Alex and me was starting to get under my skin.

But for now, I pushed my concerns aside and focused on enjoying the evening with my friends – and maybe, just maybe, something more. ‎
