I looked over my shoulder and caught Sunny's gaze.
He was clearly startled but tried to maintain his composure as he said, "Mrs. Duke, why are you back?"
Instead of answering his question, I sternly asked, "What are you doing?"
He scratched his head and raised his eyebrows at Freesia, saying, "Just playing with the li— I mean, Freesia. Isn't that right, Freesia?"
As he spoke, he deliberately leaned down, getting close to Freesia's ear.
Freesia waved her hands frantically, burying her head even lower, while the "mmmph" sounds from her mouth involuntarily became more muffled.
I pushed Sunny aside and said sharply, "Freesia doesn't like playing hide-and-seek."
Sunny shoved his hands in his pockets, fidgeting his leg and picking at his ear, "How can that be? She didn't even want to go to the special education school just so she could play hide-and-seek with me."
It was then that I realized Nolan, who was supposed to take Freesia, wasn't home.
"Where's Dad Duke?" I asked.
"How should I know?" Sunny replied, then shuffled off into the house.Unable to rush a call to Nolan, I first helped Freesia up, knowing I needed to change his clothes.
But as soon as I walked into Freesia's room, a foul stench hit me.
After settling Freesia, I followed the smell, which led me to Freesia's closet.
I froze when I opened the closet door.
The once tidy wardrobe was now in complete disarray, with some clothes visibly stained with feces.
A ball of rage ignited in my chest.
"Nanna!" I rushed to the doorway and called for the nanny.
I'd been back for a while, but she was nowhere to be seen, busy with who knows what.
After calling several times, Nanna finally came up from downstairs, looking surprised rather than pleased to see me.
"Ma'am, you're back," she said coldly.
"What's going on with Freesia's closet? Why is it such a mess? And what's on these pants? Have you been taking proper care of Freesia at all?"
I grabbed two pieces of clothing and threw them at Nanna.
She instinctively dodged, looking disgusted. "He wouldn't let me clean up. What was I supposed to do?"
"Treating a few ratty clothes like treasures, looking all poor and pathetic.Nanna came to our family two years ago when our previous nanny had to return home to take care of her grandchild. We were in desperate need of someone to help around the house.
Nolan said she was a relative from his hometown, hardworking and simple-minded. She's been with us for two years now.
Before, she was relatively polite to Freesia. I never imagined she'd come to disregard us completely.
I suppressed my anger and told her to go to the bathroom to run water for Freesia.
To my surprise, she didn't move an inch, completely ignoring me.
"I asked you to fill the bathtub. Freesia needs to take a bath," I said, enunciating each word.
Nanna kicked the clothes on the floor and said, "She can't use that bathtub."
"What?" I asked in disbelief.
It's our own bathtub in our own house. What right does she have to say we can't use it?
