Chapter 36: The Hidden Refuge

As they ran through the woods, Emily's heart was pounding in her chest. She could hear the goons behind them, their footsteps getting closer and closer.

But Samantha seemed to know where she was going, and she quickly led Emily through the dense underbrush. They finally emerged into a small clearing, where a rusty old van was waiting.

"In here!" Samantha shouted, as she yanked open the sliding side door.

Emily didn't hesitate, and she quickly scrambled into the van. Samantha followed close behind, slamming the door shut just as the goons emerged from the woods.

As they caught their breath, Emily looked around the van in confusion. It was old and rusty, with torn seats and a cracked windshield.

But Samantha just smiled. "This old girl may not look like much," she said, "but she's reliable. And she's got a few tricks up her sleeve."

As Samantha started the engine and began to drive, Emily felt a sense of relief wash over her. They had escaped the goons, at least for now.

But as they drove through the winding roads, Emily's mind began to wander. Where were they going? What was their plan?

Samantha seemed to sense her questions, and she smiled. "We're going to a safe house," she said. "A place where we can hide out for a while and regroup."

Emily nodded, feeling a sense of hope. Maybe they could finally get ahead of the Wrights and bring them to justice.

As they drove, the scenery outside the window changed from dense woods to rolling hills and finally to a small coastal town. Emily's eyes widened as she saw the ocean stretching out before them.

They finally pulled up to a small beach house on the outskirts of town. It was a cozy little place, with a wraparound porch and a bright blue door.

Samantha smiled. "Welcome to our temporary home," she said. "We'll be safe here for a while."

As they stepped out of the van and onto the sandy beach, Emily felt a sense of peace wash over her. Maybe they could finally find some rest and relaxation.

But as she looked out at the ocean, Emily's mind began to wander. What lay ahead? Would they ever be able to bring the Wrights to justice?

And then, just as she was starting to relax, Emily heard a faint noise coming from inside the house. It sounded like footsteps, light and cautious.

Samantha's eyes locked onto Emily's face. "Do you hear that?" she whispered.

Emily nodded, her heart racing with fear. "What is it?" she whispered back.

Samantha's face was grim. "I don't know, but we need to be careful."

As they waited in silence, Emily's mind was racing with questions. Who was inside the house? And what did they want?
