"Is this your ability?" inquired Lester.
While it's akin to mind-reading, there's a distinct difference in the subjects they can access. Lester possesses the ability to read the minds of the living, whereas Murong Mingyue can delve into the memories of the deceased.
Murong Mingyue nodded, explaining, "I have the capability to access the memories of those who have passed, but only from the moments leading up to their death. Dr. D's case is unique; I witnessed the moments before his demise twice."
The first instance was his death as a human; the second was his transformation and subsequent death as an undead creature. Tragically, both deaths were at the hands of the same vampire.
"During the day, Dr. D and the vampire had a dispute over the evacuation. As the area was being dismantled, it was only a matter of time before the basement was discovered. The vampire, fearing Dr. D would reveal their location, decided to eliminate him. Before his death, Dr. D injected himself with a special serum, which is why he reanimated several hours later as an undead being," Murong narrated.
"So, the serum was successful? They aim to transform the dead into undead creatures?" Lester questioned, sensing something was amiss.
Murong shook his head slightly, "I'm uncertain about that detail. It seems Dr. D was engaged in a separate line of research."
He speculated that Dr. D's actions were more about self-preservation. Ultimately, he merely became undead, suggesting his experiments weren't entirely successful. The vampire must have already secured what they wanted; otherwise, they wouldn't have so easily killed Dr. D.
Murong continued, "After attacking our benefactor, the vampire returned to investigate, puzzled over how their location was exposed. Upon encountering the undead Dr. D, the vampire realized what had transpired. A vengeful Dr. D engaged the vampire in combat, resulting in Dr. D's second death and severe injuries to the vampire."
This implied that the vampire from the Hahn household did not anticipate Dr. D reanimating as an undead. The undead Dr. D's subsequent murder of workers and guards led to the premature discovery of the basement, alerting the Morris brothers. Had Richard not arrived in time, the vampire might have devised another method to abduct Anran, given that their enchanted crosses were ineffective against humans, whereas the vampire possessed the ability to hypnotize humans or animals.
Murong then removed a ring from Dr. D's finger, stood up, and addressed the air, "Come, I will take you back, to reunite with your wife."
Though Anran saw nothing, she felt a disturbance in the air. She was surprised by Murong's words and asked, "Mr. Murong, are you leaving?"
Murong's mission was merely to locate Dr. D. With Dr. D now deceased beyond recognition, it was time for Murong to report back to his organization.
Murong looked at Anran, nodded, and handed her a small glass vial, saying, "Benefactor, take this. If you encounter that vampire again, break it open."
"What is it?" Anran asked, puzzled.
"Wraiths, collected from the old schoolhouse, all perished because of him," Murong explained. "Do not worry; these wraiths, though malevolent, have been enchanted by me and cannot harm the innocent."
Moreover, the vial contained not mere wraiths but malevolent spirits of greater power than usual, all harboring a common hatred for the surviving members of the Hahn family!
