Chapter 121: The Bittersweet Farewell

Anran carefully took the glass vial, sincerely saying, "Mr. Murong, I truly don't know how to thank you. If it weren't for you, I might not be here today."

However, Murong Mingyue merely responded indifferently, "The debt for a meal has been repaid. Should we meet again, we will be strangers."

His words left Anran utterly bewildered.

"Mr. Murong…"

By the time Anran regained her composure, Murong had already turned and left. Indeed, his mission was solely to locate Dr. D, and now that it was complete, it was time for him to return. But why had he said they would be strangers if they met again? She had thought they were friends.

Watching his solitary figure disappear, Anran felt a pang of sadness. This man, so powerful and composed, now seemed unbearably lonely.

Lester, also observing Murong's departure, said, "Anran, don't take his words to heart. He's just… I think it's likely because of his abilities…"

Anran looked at him in surprise. "Lester, do you know why he said that?"

Lester nodded slightly. "From the beginning, I noticed that Murong Mingyue, like me, possesses mind-reading abilities, though his are different. It wasn't until just now that I realized his abilities allow him to access the memories of the dead. Resurrecting the memories of the deceased inevitably comes with a cost. I believe his abilities have caused him to lose parts of his own memory. He may no longer remember events from months ago."

A wave of sorrow washed over Anran. "So, he truly will forget these things?"

"Strangers…" she murmured, now understanding his words.

Lester nodded. This was likely the real reason Murong had joined the Hunter Alliance. With his fragmented memory, he could no longer operate alone. Now, he needed companions who could remember for him.

"Did you notice how, despite his refined speech, his words seemed somewhat forced?" Lester added. "I suspect the way he speaks now isn't how he used to."

It was entirely possible that Murong had forgotten who he once was.

Anran was too stunned to speak. She hadn't imagined the truth would be like this. If the memory loss was a consequence of his abilities, Murong could avoid further deterioration by ceasing to access the memories of the dead. Yet, he had still delved into Dr. D's memories—something that wasn't even part of his mission.

"The debt for a meal…" she whispered.

In truth, she had been the one to benefit the most.

"Anran, I…" Richard, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke, though his words faltered as they escaped his lips.

"Richard, are you feeling guilty?" Anran looked at him with a gentle smile. "I know what you did today was to protect me. Tonight's events were just an accident. See, I'm fine, aren't I?"

Anran…

Richard silently called her name in his heart. It wasn't just guilt that consumed him, but also frustration over his own limitations. If Anran hadn't encountered Murong Mingyue, she might have…

Lester, perceptive as ever, patted Richard on the shoulder. "Richard, it was just an accident. But from now on, you'll have to protect Anran better. Otherwise, someone else might have to take your place as her guardian."

"Don't you dare!" Richard snapped, his defenses instantly rising.

Seeing this, Lester chuckled softly. This was the Richard he knew.

Richard moved to wrap his arms around Anran, but before he could reach her, his arm was struck with a numbing pain. He grimaced, finally remembering the important matter he had overlooked.

"Murong Mingyue…" Richard growled through clenched teeth. In a flash, he transformed into a dark streak of lightning and vanished into the night.
