Chapter Five -- What does it mean?
Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov was a book Markovic told her he was currently reading and for some reason, it was at her doorstep when she got here, was this coincidence? There had to be no way that Markovic placed it there, he was behind bars, he was in chains, this had to be a big mistake.
Cold sweat broke over her forehead, and she pulled out her phone, to call David and ask if he ordered it by chance, but this did not look like it was ordered, it looked like it was sent, what was the note on it? What did it mean? She turned around and saw two young girls walking a dog.
"Hi." The blonde one said and Poppy frowned "Hi?" She had never seen them in the neighbourhood before.
"I'm Sabrina, and this is my sister, Dolly. We just moved into the neighborhood, and we had a book delivered today, but we seem to have had the address mixed up, so, we are going house to house to check if my book got delivered here." She said and Poppy exhaled in relief "Your book. Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, right? This is it?" She gestured.
"Oh my God, yes, it is, thank you very much." The other girl gushed and Poppy nodded, she felt so relieved. "There is a note in it, I checked it, because I thought it was mine. What does it mean? I have never read the book." She asked, frowning and the blonde one smiled, reading the note.
"My boyfriend studies abroad, and he sends me gifts every time, we have been together for almost seven years now, and he still sends me gifts and acts like he has this massive crush on me. In his defence, I'm pretty hot." She grinned and Poppy smiled awkwardly, David was a good boyfriend, a wonderful fiancee, he does not have to shower her with materialistic things for her to know.
"The book is about the Karamazov brothers, and Dmitri is one of the brothers, one major struggle he battled with was morality and his need for pleasure, Moral Ambiguity is explored through him, he also went through emotional instability and spiritual crisis. Love Triangles was explored in a certain way, he battled a lot with inner turmoil and a complex personality, you should read it." She smiled and Poppy nodded, she was not going to read it.
Markovic messed with her head, which is why she thought that somehow he sent the book to her, also why she was thinking that the girl's description of Dmitri applied to her, but it was not true. She was Poppy Ellis, and had zero connection to this. Markovic would be dead soon, she won't let a dead man walking get to her.
"Thank you, and I will see you around." She smiled and they nodded, and walked away.
Poppy walked into her home, looked the door and made a beeline for the bathroom, where she got in the bath tub and tried to push away negative thoughts from her mind. She was Poppy Ellis, she was a good person.
__
Markovic was born with the devil inside him, and as he grew, so did the devil, until it was no longer interested in being dormant, until it took over him.
Morality was something he was interested in, and he knew there was nothing like Morality, everyone was damned, everyone was ruined, but they spent their entire lifetime pretending, he didn't like to pretend, he preferred to face every part of him, to look it straight on, and fight it, he was not a person who ignored his demons, he fought it, till he became it.
There was no good or bad, there was just choices, and consequences. He made certain choices that led to him being locked up, hence, choices and consequences, but Markovic was ten thousand steps ahead, he had written everything, he had taken control of his fate, he tore apart of the notion of life being predestined and he wrote down his life, he took control, he loved to be in control.
Poppy Ellis was part of the plan, and he had watched her for a very long time. He smiled as he remembered the way she frowned when she stared at him, the way she tried to dissect his mind, the way she desperately try to understand, to be let in. She wanted to let her in, and he would let her into his mind, but when he did, he would not let her out.
She was his, she belonged to him, in every way and every form, but this had been a long time coming, he had killed a lot of people to be where he was, he had burnt a lot of money to be right here, in a cell, every step he had taken has led her to him, it has led him right here, which is why he would play his game carefully, he would bid his time, he would hook the worm to catch his fish, he would set his perfect trap and she would fall into it, then he would never let her go. She might not remember him, but he remembered her, he had never forgotten her.
Poppy Ellis was a liar, a pretender and she held on tight to societal norms and rules, she believed she was a good person, she had gone straight all her life, she had made the right decision, gone to the right school, dated the right man, and in a few months, she believed she would marry her fiance and started the next phase of her life. She would start a new phase of her life, but with Markovic. He was going to rid her of all the restriction she tied herself with, he was going to show her how easy it was to become a killer, how blissful taking a life was, how freeing it was to live a free life.
Markovic Pierce believed he had all the control, but Dr. Poppy Ellis would be his undoing, he just didn't know it yet.
