Chapter 26: A Villainess on the Run (For Five Whole Minutes)

Seraphina sprinted down the moonlit path, her dress billowing behind her.

Her heart pounded in her chest, but for the first time in weeks—FREEDOM WAS IN SIGHT.

The carriage she had bribed was waiting at the end of the road, the driver already holding the reins.

I can do this. I can escape. I can—

A shadow loomed behind her.

A smooth voice purred, "Where do you think you're going, darling?"

Seraphina didn't look back. She threw a rock over her shoulder and kept running.

Damian caught it mid-air like it was a piece of candy.

Lila stepped in front of her, blocking the path, her arms crossed.

Seraphina skidded to a stop. "YOU TELEPORTED?!"

Lila smiled. "We took the shortcut."

Seraphina turned slowly.

Damian was behind her, Lila was in front, and she was in the middle like a very annoyed sandwich.

"Did you really think we wouldn't prepare for this?" Damian mused.

Lila tilted her head. "I was hoping you'd at least last ten minutes. You made it five."

Seraphina grabbed her head.

"This isn't happening. This is a fever dream. I am HALLUCINATING."

Lila reached out and pinched her cheek. "Real enough?"

Seraphina bit her hand.

Lila gasped, dramatically holding her injured hand to her chest. "You wounded me."

Damian sighed. "Are you done?"

"No," Seraphina said, kicking him in the shin again.

This time, Damian caught her ankle.

Seraphina yelped as he effortlessly lifted her off the ground.

"PUT ME DOWN, YOU OVERGROWN BAT."

Damian smirked. "Only if you promise not to run."

"I WILL NEVER PROMISE THAT."

Lila yawned. "Well, now that we have her, shall we take our dear runaway bride home?"

Seraphina struggled, wiggled, and flailed.

"YOU CAN'T FORCE ME TO MARRY YOU."

Damian tilted his head. "I don't recall you having a choice."

Lila nodded. "The invitations are sent, the guests are coming, and the Queen has already planned your wedding dress. What do you think happens if you run?"

Seraphina froze.

Her entire kingdom would turn upside down.

The scandal would be immense.

She groaned. "I hate everything."

Lila patted her back. "There, there."

Damian threw her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

Seraphina kicked wildly. "UNHAND ME, YOU FIEND."

Damian chuckled. "You really need to work on your insults."

Seraphina screamed. "THIS IS KIDNAPPING!"

Lila corrected her. "This is a bridal escort."

Seraphina gave up and went limp.

"…I should've just gotten executed."

Damian grinned. "Too late for that now, love."

Lila smirked. "Welcome home, future wife."
