Chapter 47

Nicholas frowned, visibly irritated by the accusation. "I didn't get involved with Maria. Emily got the wrong idea."

Amor’s anger turned to disbelief, his laughter harsh and bitter. "Lies now? If you weren’t involved, why was Maria living in your home? Why did you give her the wedding dress I had made for Emily? And why were you parading her around like she was your wife?"

Before Nicholas could respond, a dull thud echoed from behind. Both men turned to see Emily standing there, her face unreadable, eyes fixed on them. Amor’s heart clenched at the sight, his anger shifting to concern.

Amor watched Emily carefully, unsure how much she'd overheard. If she had heard Nicholas defending Maria, it would only cause her more pain. “Emily, how did you get here?”

Emily blinked, shaking herself out of her thoughts, and smiled faintly. She bent down to pick up the phone that had slipped from Amor’s hand. “Grandpa, you left your phone in my room. I just came to return it.”
