Conditional liberation

“I think he’s hiding a dark secret." This sentence had not stopped torturing Carmen's mind and she wondered what her disabled husband could be hiding although he was intriguing. She had never heard of him and that was completely normal since he was not a super star. He was so negative that she couldn't even imagine that he could be hiding something positive. She wanted to believe that this woman was right to find out what he could be hiding from her, she had to get out of this cell and go to his house. the fact of wanting his freedom at all costs was no longer relevant even if he gave it to him while still letting his friend invest in his father's business.

If it was only a human absence that was hindering his recovery, she thought that his friend could have brought him to live with him so that he would not feel alone. A marriage with a woman was not obligatory since she did not think that he necessarily had sexual desires. This situation was problematic and required her to dig deeper.

“Felix Alvarez, who are you really?” She whispered to herself.

She already doubted that he was really Felix Alvarez because he could always use a bad identity to make fun of her. Did he have no family? No one besides his friend? No one had fallen from the sky to not have a family, that was certain.

“You can go out, miss."

She didn't pay attention to the lieutenant who had just said it because it couldn't be her he was talking to. She couldn't go out because she hadn't even been twenty-four hours yet.

“It’s you I’m speaking to,” the latter continued, pointing at her. “Mr. Lutero has just pleaded for you and your husband withdraws his testimony so no more charges are being brought against you.”

“You think it’s beautiful, don’t you? but if you don't want to investigate an upcoming death, please keep me here with you because my husband is a psychopath."

He huffed in exasperation and started to leave. She imagined that they had spent a good part of the night conspiring and that to take action, she had to go home. When she arrived outside, she saw Hugo leaning against his car with his sunglasses on. She walked slowly and he opened the car door for her without saying a word. He didn't care if he spoke or not.

“Did you really do that?”

“If my opinion mattered, you could have asked me before bringing in the police to arrest me like a delinquent. I don't know if you just want to reassure your conscience but don't worry, everything is fine and I promise you that the day I have money, I will make you pay double what you paid me done today.”

“I have no need to redeem my conscience Carmen and besides, I have nothing against you. Everything I do, I do it for my best friend who is like my brother and your differences are your business because you are a couple. I know that when you see yourself standing and he is sitting in his chair, you tell yourself that you can step on him and that is precisely what I want to avoid. That you disrespect him because of his disability. I didn't force you to marry him because your father has two daughters. If his choice fell on you, you don’t have to blame anyone.”

To no one other than his father that was entirely true but that wasn't all. If he had spoken to her with a little kindness, she figured he could have done more to satisfy her hungry curiosity.

“Who really is the man I married?"

“A man whose life has not been kind to him, a man who refuses to face the truth and I am afraid that if he finds recovery one day, he will suffer again and I am very afraid that he might die."

Regain recovery and die, Carmen was lost and he didn't want to go into details and she could only settle for that. She wondered what this truth was that he didn't want to see.

When the car stopped outside the building, she got out and looked around. The day before, she hadn't had the chance to take a good look. When she saw Hugo coming towards her slowly, she also went back but was stuck by the car. She wondered if it was in a public square that he was going to kill her. He took her hands in his while she was totally lost.

“I know that I acted very badly with you and for that already, I ask you to forgive me. There are things you would like to understand but I can't really tell you because it's not up to me to do it. I can reassure you that Felix has never killed anyone so you are not risking your life and at the same time I would like to ask you something. For me he is like a child who would like someone to hold out his hand and I am counting on you. You did not choose to be in this situation, you sacrificed yourself for your family and I would like your gentleness to always surpass anything hurtful he could do to you. Carmen, please help him because I know he needs help even if he’s never going to admit it.”

She was not a medical professional and she did not know how to do it. He didn't even give her the chance to hav

e a simple conversation with him.
