“Miss, until we have concrete proof of your innocence, we will keep you here.”
“It all doesn’t make sense. It was Mr. Lutero’s lawyer who brought me to Felix. Tell me when I stopped to buy sleeping pills. This is an unfounded accusation from my husband and I can’t stand it. I want a lawyer."
“Except your husband’s best friend decided otherwise. You will not be assigned a lawyer."
She calmed down and let herself be dragged by them. She just had to endure and hope that they would get her out of there very quickly. When she was thrown into her cell, she looked at the place and still couldn't believe it. A few hours earlier, she was still the young woman who dreamed of a life far from Seville and her family. She dreamed of finding a good job and one day finding love but everything was down the drain and even worse, love.
Thinking about her mother made bad thoughts arise in her head and yet, she kept telling herself that if only her mother was there, she could have guided her, she could have saved her from this situation in a way that Paula had not. Hesitated to protect his daughter. All thatwhat interested them was their happiness linked to money but his life mattered very little to them. Being in the cell one day, seeing herself handcuffed one day was something she never imagined and yet it was the case. She was going to die in prison if her husband decided, and her best friend too. Was it her karma for killing her mother as Paula said.
She had believed in the past that she always said it just to hurt him because his mother was the woman his husband cheated on him with. She had taken her first steps, spoken her first words to this woman who already despised her even when she was a baby. She had suggested several times to her father to have her adopted and leave her in a children's center but the latter had refused and for the price of this refusal, she suffered his insults and those of her daughter, she had to do everything at home. House without ever complaining. She had once hoped that the latter might lift a finger but he pretended not to notice anything and that was how it persisted.
His college life had been his worst nightmare. She had to learn the lessons of the upper class because Célia was two years older than her but it was up to her to do her homework every day and make sure that she did not get undergraded. She had come close to overwork for a time but to have any semblance of peace, she had to dominate this situation.
She had never had a teenage life and didn't know what it could be like. all the boys in high school saw her as less than nothing because of her sister who missed no opportunity to humiliate her. If this marriage of convenience had been with a normal, rich man, she was certain that it would have been her sister instead of her as always.
No suffering surprised her but she still preferred to suffer it instead of remaining locked up.
“I heard why you are here, miss.” Said the guard.
She looked at her but said nothing. It was normal that she knew it and because the information traveled very quickly and besides, if Hugo wanted, all of Spain could know that she wanted to kill her husband. It wouldn't cost him anything at all.
“I have never seen what this friend of Mr. Lutero looks like but he cares a lot about him and men like that, I have seen them in my life. People who are in pain and who would like to blame their pain on others. You just need the right strategy to tame it.”
Tame it? She didn't know who she was talking about but these two men were indomitable like lions. Who would have thought that Felix would be capable of making up such a story that the police even believe to be true? for his friend, it was worse.
“I’m talking about your husband. According to a magazine, this man has been paralyzed and blind for three years. Can you just imagine what it’s like to stand there and in the dark for that long? He is afraid that you will pity him. He is afraid and you can get there if you ever want to go away in peace.”
A tip she offered him. Until then, she had done everything to let him know that she understood him, she had been natural with him but he did not want her kindness which he certainly took for pity.
“Can I have the name of this magazine please? I need to know things about my husband.”
It was truly deplorable. Wanting to know her husband by reading a bit of the press while he was still alive and he could tell her everything she wanted to know.
“I'm sorry but the agency closed just a few hours after this information was published. Sometimes I wonder if Felix Alvarez is just a simple handicapped person as he suggests. He hides many secrets and if I were you, I wouldn’t hesitate to dig.”
She didn't see what secret he could be hiding. He just didn't want to show himself to the whole world because of his health condition and even worse because he couldn't have the opportunity to see with what eyes people looked at him. She blamed him but she couldn't blame him. He needed to reassure himself and only he could do it because only what he felt deep inside could be true.
