Chapter 6

The loud noise stunned the Vances and woke Lucas, who was pretending to be asleep on the bed.

Lucas had never seen Evie so out of control, so full of hostility; she was always so calm and composed.

"Evie? Why are you here?" he asked, feigning surprise.

But Evie completely ignored Lucas. She stared intently at the Vances, every word seeming forced out between gritted teeth:

"I heard everything! Your conversation, word for word! What were you just talking about?!"

Cynthia was still too flustered to react. Richard spoke first, trying to cover up:

"We... we didn't say anything, Evie. We were just remarking on how Lucas got hurt for you, that his feelings for you run so deep. You mustn't let him down."

Richard's guilty yet composed demeanor was particularly glaring in Evie's eyes.
