Synopsis

Mr. Valen is three things:

A nicotine-addicted debt slave with no memory, a genetically engineered genius and a dead man walking.

When a trigger unlocks his memories, he discovers the horrifying truth: everything he had known was a lie, he was always meant to be enslaved.

Preposterous.

With the help of his intelligence watch him outsmart his captors and escape his fate only to plunge himself into an unforgiving other world, one where every powerful being is given a weakness including him.

Cannibals pretending to be saviours.

Witches Trading in Lies

And ultimate beings who control everything from behind a veil.

The rules say he should be dead, unfortunately, Mr. Valen has chosen...

PS: «If you see text formatted like this, it means the main character is speaking to you directly. Think of it as a private aside—just between the two of you. This isn’t part of the narrator’s voice or the usual story dialogue. In a way, you’re someone the MC imagined, a fleeting thought given shape. Don’t worry, they’re not crazy… probably.»

Shameless Author here trying to convince you to read my book. Why Read? 1. It's awesome. 2. Number One 3. You get a ruthless, cerebral and manipulative MC who plays the long game, ohh and he's insane. 4. Body horror meets dark fantasy, think Venom meets Re Zero, it gets a bit gory, but in a good way. 5. Heavy Politics, a very dangerous other world and an intricate magic system, what else could you ask for in a fantasy setting?

Ok, so I'm only through Chapter 3 so far but I have thoughts! First of all, this is incredibly interesting. The world is dark and gritty, very cyberpunk 2077 meets film noir. Valen as a character intrigues me. Though, admittedly I have made slow going of it because the author uses such rapid gear changes (which admittedly keeps it interesting). However, he tends not to sit in a pocket very long. This story would be well served by shifting gears less and letting me feel more for the character early. I am still torn on Valen at the end of 3 chapters. But still! Anybody who is a fan of dark pulpy fiction would be well served by giving "Crown of Blasphemy" a shot! This guy has the writing chops! I have added it to my library and will be updating this review as I go along :D

If you read it with the mindset that it probably has all of the content warnings for a reason, then you might be pleasantly surprised with it. It seems like in the first few chapters it was pretty well written and not as graphic as I thought it might… I only read it at first because the author directly recommended it to me, because it fit a very narrow set of criteria I used to describe my stereotype of “deep generalists,” but I like how it portrays parallels to a few of the darker and grittier aspects of learning difficulties and neurodiversity issues… So if you wanted something like that, and are slightly decent at toning out dark stuff, when it’s dampened with a hint of humor, then I could highly recommend this book. Also, the fantasy aspects in this book are very interesting and intriguing to me, since it seems to have some wildly interesting ideas in it for the main character. (*Deep generalists are, in an extremely oversimplified explanation; like nerds that, instead of studying one thing extremely thoroughly, like a specialist, they study whatever feels vaguely helpful, and might use it extremely effectively for their primary focus… like an author studying random topics to improve his story depth and character backstories… Or a spy that studies all sorts of psychology, political history, sciences, and other topics so as to be more versatile and take on more varied missions.)
