"Sterling, what have you done?"  I whispered, my voice trembling.  "He was just asking for help!"

My stepbrother's eyes, usually a deep emerald green, now glowed with predatory amber as he shifted partially back from his wolf form.  His breathing was heavy, primal.

"He was too close to you, Aurora.  His scent was all over you."  Sterling's voice was eerily calm as he wiped blood from his hands onto his dark jeans.  "No man approaches what's mine."

Mine.  That word made my skin crawl.  I wasn't his.  I was his stepsister, not his possession.

My heart stopped. The world around me narrowed to just that phone—my lifeline, my secret—dangling between Kaelen's fingers.


"Where did you find that?" I whispered, though I already knew the answer. He'd been searching my things.


"You're insulting me now." Kaelen's voice remained eerily calm. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice? That I wouldn't keep track of everything that's mine?"


I backed up a step. "Kaelen, I can explain—"


"Explain what, exactly?" His fingers tightened around the phone. "Explain how you've been sneaking around behind my back? Messaging him?"


The phone screen illuminated, revealing Liam's name. Missed calls. Text messages. Each one a nail in my coffin.


"Who gave this to you?" Kaelen demanded, his composure cracking. "Was it Liam? Your precious boyfriend who can't seem to understand that you belong to someone else?"
