Chapter 49 - The Hunter's Welcome

My heart hammered in my chest as I stumbled away from Liam's house. The look in Kaelen's eyes—that cold, murderous fury—played on repeat in my mind.

"I should walk you home," Liam had insisted, his face etched with concern.

"No!" I'd practically shouted, gathering my purse with trembling hands. "I'm fine. I'll take a taxi."

I couldn't risk it. Couldn't risk Kaelen seeing Liam with me. Couldn't risk what he might do.

Now, sitting in the back of a taxi, I kept checking over my shoulder, certain I'd see Kaelen's sleek black car following us. The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror.

"You okay, miss?"

I nodded stiffly. "Fine. Just... drop me a few blocks from the address I gave you."

"You sure? It's pretty late."

"I'm sure."

The taxi slowed to a stop three blocks from Kaelen's—our—house. I handed the driver cash, including a generous tip.
