## Hazel's POV
The blinking cursor on my laptop screen mocked me as I stared at the email from my lawyer. The words swam before my eyes, but their meaning was unmistakable.
"In cases of severe illness, inmates may qualify for medical parole. Financial responsibility for continued care would fall to immediate family members."
I closed my laptop with more force than necessary. Of course Tanya would find a way to make Harold's imprisonment my problem.
My phone buzzed. Unknown number. I almost declined it but something made me answer.
"Hazel? It's your Aunt Meredith."
I stiffened. My father's sister hadn't contacted me in years.
"Aunt Meredith," I said evenly. "What a surprise."
"How are you, dear?" Her voice dripped with artificial sweetness. "I hear you're doing quite well for yourself. That new boyfriend of yours is quite wealthy, isn't he?"
Trust her to get straight to the point. "Is there something I can help you with?"
