## Hazel's POV
"Earth to Hazel!" Vera snapped her fingers in front of my face, yanking me from my thoughts. "You've been staring at nothing for five straight minutes."
I blinked, refocusing on my friends' concerned faces. We were in Vera's sleek SUV, headed toward my company headquarters after our lunch with Cora.
"Sorry," I mumbled. "Just processing."
Cora's revelations about Sebastian's family had left me reeling. The weight of his sacrifice pressed down on my chest.
"Don't let that family drama get to you," Vera said, reading my thoughts as usual. "Sebastian's a big boy. He makes his own choices."
Cora smiled from the passenger seat. "Exactly. And he's chosen you, Hazel. Quite emphatically."
I forced a smile, but my mind raced with doubts. How could I possibly compete with someone like Fiona Xu? A scandal-free heiress with Harvard credentials versus me—a woman with a disastrous family and an even more disastrous marriage behind her.
