Shielded from Hate

## Hazel's POV

I watched in frozen horror as the liquid flew toward my face, my body refusing to move. Everything slowed down—the amber liquid catching the light, Gloria's hate-filled eyes, the collective gasp of the crowd.

"Hazel!" Cora's voice broke through my paralysis.

Instinct kicked in. I shoved Cora away from me with all my strength, sending her stumbling backward. At least she would be safe.

Then a dark blur shot in front of me. Sebastian.

"No!" I screamed.

He turned his back to Gloria, wrapping his arms around me and shielding me completely with his body. The liquid hit him with a sizzling hiss. The acrid smell of burning fabric and something worse filled the air.

"Sebastian!" My voice broke with terror.

His face contorted in pain, but he remained focused on me. "Are you hurt?"

"Your back!" I pushed at his chest. "Take off your jacket, now!"
