The Book Of Sorceres And Societies

They both turned and looked at the person who was standing before them. Ava quickly let go while Noah still had his arm on her back.

"What are the both of you doing here?"

"M-mom. W-what are you doing here?" Ava stuttered.

"It's past midnight, I was so worried about you guys. You didn't answer any of my calls."

"I'm sorry. We lost track of time."

"And what happened to you? Why do you have so many bruises and scars?"

Ava stayed silent not knowing what to say, she gripped unto Noah's shirt in nervousness.

"Well?"

"I-I..."

"We missed the bus and that was the last one for the day, so we had to walk back.

We went through the woods and she tripped. We got tired so we took a break here," Noah explained.

Ava's mom nodded. She looked at Ava who looked really tired.

"Let's get you home Ava. Noah would you be okay going on your own?"

He nodded and smiled at Ava. She smiled back as she limped back home with her mother. Noah laid down and stared at the sky as he drifted off to sleep underneath the shining moonlight. Suddenly he was disrupted by his phone vibrating. He lazily picked it up and looked at it, seeing it was a message from Ava.

Ava: Hey. Did you get home safely?

Noah sighed as he looked at her text message. He felt bad for lying to her, but he didn't want to worry anyone.

Noah: Yes. How are you feeling now?

Ava: Better than before. But a bit bummed.

Noah: Why so?

Ava: I left my jacket there. It's ok though, I'll just buy a new one.

Noah: Ok. Will you be able to come to school tomorrow?

Ava: Yup.

Noah. Okay. I'll walk you to school.

Ava: Ok, thanks.

Noah: No problem. You should get some rest. Goodnight.

Ava: Night.

He put his phone down and stared into the sky, a tear falling down his face. By the time he knew it, it was already morning and he had to see Ava.

Ava got up with much more strength, although her chest was still hurting. She put on a shirt that would cover up the amulet, so no-one would be suspicious of it. She went downstairs and had breakfast. There was a sudden knock on the door. Ava figured it was Noah, so she ate the last bit of her toast, grabbed her bag, and walked towards the door. She opened the door to see Noah, but the was something odd about him. Ava couldn't put her finger on it, so she ignored it for the time being. He smiled as he saw her bright smile.

"You look happier."

"Yup," she gleamed.

They both walked out and made their way to school.

"You're wearing the same clothes as yesterday?" she questioned.

Noah mentally kicked himself, forgetting about his clothes. He looked at Ava who was still waiting for an answer.

"Uhm..yea, I guess. I liked the outfit, so I had some time to wash it and wear it again."

Ava slowly nodded. He knew that she didn't believe him, but they went along with it. Eventually he would have to tell her the truth about everything, but he's scared if that will be the end of their friendship. He can't handle another person leaving his life.

"So, What's the plan for today?" she asked.

"Well. We'll go to the library to find out more information about the amulet. I'll also find a way to get my history book in case we need it."

"Okay. What about me?"

He looked at her puzzled as to what she was talking about.

"How am I supposed to control these powers I suppose we can call them."

"Good point. We have some lessons, together right?"

She nodded in agreement.

"Okay then, we'll stay together as much as possible and maybe like that we can control it better. Try to avoid as many people as possible though."

"Okay."

They walked the rest of the way talking about their lessons and joking about. They both knew what happened last night, but they refused to talk about it. They went to their first lesson and sat next to each other. There would be times where Ava would lose focus and start remembering everything about yesterday. Her amulet will start glowing, the bright colour penetrating through her shirt. Noah will quickly try to snap her back out of it and that's how the first two lessons went.

Last lesson Ava and Noah had to be in different places. Ava had to explore the school as part of her class assignment. She was walking through an empty hallway which led to the football pitch. As she kept walking a girl that looked about her age stood in front of the door leading outside. She had no colour on her. Just black and white, but the odd thing was that Ava could see through her. Ava looked around to see if anyone was there, but it was just her and this entity. She closed her eyes shut hoping it would go away but when she opened her eyes it seemed like the girl moved a step forward. It took a step forward, as a wide smile spread across its lanky face.

"Go away!" Ava yelled.

It took another step forward. By this point, Ava was breathing heavily as she clutched unto her chest. A tear rolled down her face. As she turned to run, a wall blocked her way. She couldn't believe what was happening to her. She looked back at the girl who had taken a few steps forward again. Ava pulled her shirt a bit lower to see that the amulet was glowing brighter and brighter by the second. She quickly grabbed a mirror from her pocket and looked at her face. Her eyes were turning darker and darker. The girl was just a few steps away from her, when Ava dropped to her knees and closed her eyes.

Suddenly she felt four strong arms holding her up. She opened her eyes to see Noah and one of his friends holding her up. They sat her down and gave her water to drink. Ava looked behind Noah and saw that the girl was gone. She exhaled and patiently drank the water. After a few minutes, she was feeling better and was able to stand up on her own.

"What happened?" Noah's friend asked.

She looked at Noah, who looked like he already had an answer.

"Sometimes she gets too stressed and she would usually pass out."

He nodded and looked at her.

"Are you okay now?"

"Yes. Thanks for asking Aiden."

"Anytime. I have to go to football practice, but I'll catch you later."

"Okay. See ya," Noah responded.

Ava and Noah watched him go through the doors to meet his friends. They both walked together to the nearby library that was a few minutes away from their school. They walked and laughed until they reached the Reapermore Library. They shuffled up the steps and pushed open the heavy swing door.

They entered an empty with only an old librarian sitting at the desk. Dust floated lazily in the air causing them a tough time breathing, and every step put more of it into the air. All that was heard were the faint chirps of birds outside, the scurrying feet of invisible rodents, and the rustling of papers catching the draft. They strode towards the help desk as they pressed the bell.

The librarian looked up from her small glasses. Ava gazed at the old woman before her. The wrinkles and folds of skin were now so pronounced it was hard to tell what she must have looked like as a young woman. Her hair was jet black, her lips had been fattened and her eyelashes were false.

"How may I help you?" she said in a high-pitched voice.

"We're looking for the non-fiction books," Noah answered.

The lady looked back at the computer next to her and pointed at an aisle. They looked at the aisle and thanked her.

"One more question. How come there aren't any people in here?" Ava asked.

"Since a little girl went missing in this library 5 years ago people stopped coming here. Just a few elders come here to read."

Ava nodded and caught up to Noah who was already on his way to the non-fictional books. They stood at the start of the aisle. Dust collected everywhere as far as the could see, spider webs wove loosely around books, stained shelves, and stands. Row after row of neatly lined up books with their spines facing outward, colour coded with dots, fiction section arranged in alphabetical order. They wandered inside as they each separated to find the book they needed. As they were searching through every shelf, Noah speeded towards Ava as he held a thick book in his hand.

"Got it."

They walked towards the nearest table and sat down. The book named 'Book of Sorcerers and Societies' told information of evil people and evil societies that happened long ago.
