Chapter - XI

"Pray tell, where does our path lead and wherefore is Lucas? What tale ties you to the Castle?" I inquired him, my words heavy with curiosity.

"I am his superior, and in these lands, I hold dominion overall. However, I must offer you an explanation. My men saw you and informed me of your illegal entry into my castle, and as I spoke with Lucas, I bade him to investigate. He soon discovered your presence, and your bravery in daring to trespass at such an hour," he explained, his tone steady and unemotional.

My heart leapt with joy at the realization that Lucas had been on his way to rescue me, even before he knew it was me. That's why he told me I was lucky "So, do you intend to reward me for my daring escape, Mr. Quinsley?" I teased; my words were laced with humor. He remained silent; his intentions unclear.

As our journey continued, I noticed that snowflakes had begun to fall, adding to the already surreal nature of my experience. Our car soon came to a stop, and I was surprised to find myself standing before a towering skyscraper. Engraved upon its gates were the words "Enoch Research Center of Forensic Studies." I couldn't fathom why he had brought me here instead of his opulent palace, where I could have rested in luxury and ease. My thoughts wandered to the possibilities of a romance novel, where I fell in love with him and he with me. I chuckled to myself at the absurdity of my thoughts.

As we stepped out of the car, four men in black suits joined us, and more cars arrived. Lucas joined Alec, Lou stood beside me, and we felt out of place and uncomfortable in their presence. They began conversing in hushed tones, and I wondered if something catastrophic was about to occur. The building itself was imposing and ominous, adding to my growing sense of unease.

I cleared my throat, hoping to get their attention and perhaps some water to soothe my aching throat from the cold and lack of hydration. However, I received a hostile reception, despite having just been rescued from a near-death experience.

"Peter, get us a cabin," Lucas commanded his man, and he immediately made a call.

The skyscraper gates opened, and guards armed with weapons and walkie-talkies appeared before us. They bowed to Alec, granting us entry. We were led into a deluxe suite-like cabin, and Alec ordered his bodyguards to stay outside. It was just the four of us now.

"Oxyvi and Lou, I know this is all perplexing to you, but we have little time for formalities. Lucas has informed me that you two arts skilled in the excavating past remains, antiques, and bodies. Is this true?" Alec asked, his tone commanding and authoritative.

Despite my surprise at his sudden interrogation, I shared my qualifications with him. The purpose of my rescue and why he had brought me to this center of forensic studies remains a mystery.

"Your qualifications are of no consequence, I already know what you do and FYI you work under me" Lucas interjected, his expression grave. "What matters is that you are the closest and most trustworthy person I know, and I am trustworthy to Alec. I call upon you because we believe that you can help us. Do not be disappointed, for the stakes are high."

"You both are working for S E A R C H. How fascinating" Alec spoke, his voice laced with a hint of caution. "But listen closely, the reason why Lucas has called upon you both is, it is a personal matter, one that may cause some trepidation. The hour is late, and the darkness outside seems to hold secrets that even we cannot fathom."

"I have so many questions, but I fear that answers will not be forthcoming." Lou whispered.

"Don't Worry Lou, you did a great job, I'll converse with you later, now if you may excuse me and Oxyvi." Alec grinned. I gave a suspicious look at Lou and her betraying gaze fell on the ground.

Lucas led her out of the room leaving me alone with this domineering figure.
