Chapter 23: And I Thought Calculus Was Hard

Gwen's words about Lance parade in my mind as I push through the wooden doors to Magic Theory class. Mrs. Jonas stands in front of a table of silver instruments. As I get closer, I make out small saws, carving knives, sanders, leather gloves, and odd crystals.

"Good morning, class." She pushes her red hair off her shoulder, her usual flowing dress replaced with what looks like riding boots, pants, and a long sleeve shirt. "Today we are going to make our wands. Now I know many of you have had yours since you've done this with Miss Cassandra when you hit puberty."

A few of the guys snicker.

"However, this wand today will carry you from now until adulthood...possibly even beyond for some you. Any idea why some will need a new wand again and others not?"

Myers, the guy from my previous class raises his hand. "Because some of us change more as a person than others?"

"Good, can you give us an example?"
