Chapter 23 “Yellow stone”

The sun blooms on the horizon, golden petals stretching outwards into the rich blue. It is the brilliant flower of the sky that warms our days.

It is the invitation to a new day, that extraordinary sunrise. But also too bright as I covered my eyes using my arm.

I looked up at the clock, yawning and stretching out. It was only 6 am, and the sun was high up in the sky. I stood up and walked over to the mirror, and got dressed.

I somehow had no appetite. Thats when I remembered what had happened last night. Shit, is she okay?

I exited my room and found her door still close. I knocked on the door, but there was no answer.

Could she still be asleep, I tried peaking through the keyhole, but it was too dark.

Dammit, I looked around. It was quiet, I pushed down the door handle, and slowly the door went open, making a squeaking sound.

The room had a smell to it, like wet animal skin. I stepped closer. "Mia, are you awake?"

The room was dark, and as well as my eyesight, I had difficulty seeing Mia in the pitch-dark room.

I walked blindly to her bed and saw Mia lying peacefully in her silk baby blue boxers and a black top.

She lay with her legs apart, and arms spread out like she was getting hot.

I walked out, and as I exited, Maka came from the bathroom and saw me exiting the room.

Maka is wearing white shorts and a yellow top, and her hair hangs loose over her shoulder. She woke up a few minutes ago, but it looked like she had come out of a modeling photoshoot. She smiled and walked past me.

I felt a chill of coldness as she passed. Maka stopped and looked pushed open the door peeking inside Mia's room.

"Where is she?"

"Where is who?"

"Mia, you just came from her room. Is she downstairs?"

I frowned, walking over, I knew its dark, but the door was wide open. The light shined onto Mia's bed, "she was not there?"

I was confused. The smell of wet animal fur had a musky perfume, "she was just there."

Maka shook her head in disbelief.

"You are breaking the rules, Kai," she spilled out.

"What do you mean breaking the rules?"

"You and Mia, this is not how it was supposed to be. This will weaken your ability to do things?"

"It's too early to do this, Maka."

She smiled, "Okay, Kai, clearly you dont want to talk about it, and one more thing, Lei and I are not dating anymore."

"What happened?" I sounded worried, and I was relieved deep down on the inside.

"As you would say, it's too early to talk about it. I have to get ready for school."

I walked back to the room, wondering if I had seen Mia or if I was just delusional. I know she was in the room.

She lay with her arms out, and her legs and the room had a unfamiliar smell.

I stood in the mirror, trying to fasten my tie, agitated. Things felt abit too much. This last week, I learned I am an alpha hybrid and could turn people to ashes.

Then Maka suddenly had a boyfriend, and Lei had the same stone as mine. Something about Lei made me worried.

When arriving downstairs, Mia was at the table preparing breakfast. She looked different, her hair was perfectly plaited, and I noticed the tip of her hair had an orange glow.

She was wearing black Jeans and a tight-fitted black top. She had this radiance to her glow. She glanced up while finely cutting a tomato. Mia smiled, looking up at me, "hey stranger, how did you sleep?"

Interesting choice of words to use, 'stranger.'

"I slept well, thanks," I answered, hearing myself, sounding formal.

Maka came running down the stairs with her back park pack wearing long, lengthy black boots with apples and black tights under, a short leather skirt, and a leather Jacket with silver spikes.

She slowed down in the center of the stairs as she glanced at Mia, "I wasn't expecting to find you here."

Mia glanced up and smiled, revealing her perfect dimples, "when waking up in the morning, do you expect to see certain people?"

Maka was unsure how to respond, then finally cropped up the words, "not an expectation, just, you know we got a school to go to, and you are here to serve us by cleaning and getting food?"

Mia smiled, placing the plate in front of me. It was a toasted cheese sandwich. She repeated, "serve us? I am not here to serve anyone that's including you.

As instructed, I am here to assist Jia and Kai, which has nothing to do with you."

Has she forgotten I am not human? Why is she serving me sandwiches? I noticed the teeth mark on her neck. It was not visible unless you were close to her, "besides, I am starting today," she added.

"Starting where or what?"

"Starting to get on my nerves," Maka replied, sounding annoyed.

Jia stepped into the kitchen, holding a book, and looked up at Maka and Mia, "Mia is starting school with my brother and you."

Maka glanced over at me, expecting me to say something. I looked up at her and then at my sister, "well, that's great news, Mia. You will have more friends then."

Jia replied with a straight face, "she is not going there for friends, dear brother."

"Yeah, of course, she is going for education."

"No, idiot, she is there for you."

"Why didn't you say anything to me?" said Maka. Jia and Mia smiled as if Maka had finally said something sensible.

"I did last night in the sitting room. You were too busy with Lei and probably never heard."

Was she busy with Lei? I felt disappointment and anger, but I saw it coming. Why was I still surprised?

"He never stayed over," Maka replied.

"I never said he stayed over," Jia said as her eyes darkened.

Maka gripped the fork and looked at Mia, "shall you drop me off, please."

"Jia, I don't mind dropping you off."

Jia turned and looked at her. If looked could kill. She pushed out a fake smile, "I am fine. My arrangement is with Mia."

Jia picked up her bag and threw it over her shoulder. Mia followed, glancing over at us. As soon as the door closed, Maka slammed the fork into the table, "will you let her insult me like that? How could you?"

"She is six years old, Maka. What am I supposed to do?"

"I don't know, Kai, talk to your miss goody two shows who's perfect in your bloody sister's eyes. I want Mia out of here, and I want her out of our lives?"

"Why Maka? What had Mia done to you?"

Maka snapped, "what has she done to me?"

"Ever since she is around, you and your sister have changed, Maria Just died, and now it's Mia. What's next? We have the princess of wolverine moving in here?"

I found that funny, 'princess of wolverine.' I've never heard that one before.

"Listen, Maka. I am not here to listen to your tantrums."

Maka ran over to me, gripping me by the chest, trying to push me to the wall, but it was like a feather flying to a fan. I lifted my arms in the air. "relax, take a breather, Maka."

"Dont forget I changed you. I am the one who gave you the power you have."

I felt a sense of anger at this remark. Did she turn me? Yes, she did, but I was destined.

It was in my blood way before. The power I had now just needed the awakening.

"You never changed me. You just pushed me to remind me I was standing alone when I got bullied. You have done nothing except feed on my weakness."

"You a bloody idiot if you believe half the garbage you are saying," she slammed her fist into the wall next to me, "dammit, Kai, why are you so blind to see the obvious?"

"What is there to see, Maka, besides this insane behavior all because of Mia and my sister?"

Without saying another word, she pushed against me and pressed her cold lips to mine, kissing me.

I had been waiting for this, but it was not as enjoyable as I had imagined. I felt I felt, nothing that was it.

I felt nothing except the coldness on her lips to mine. I pulled away and shook my head, "this is not what we both want."

Maka's eyes began to glow red, and as her fangs came out, she grabbed my shirt with her sharp nails gripping it so hard her nails tore into my flesh.

She pushed her lips to my neck, and the doorbell rang as she was about to bite me. She had let loose of her grip, looked over to the silver steel pot staring at herself, and let loose the grip when looking down at her fingernails, her long nails, the point of it that had scratched into my flesh, melted. Her eyes grew wide, "this can't be," she said in shock as she moved back.

I was just as surprised as she was. She would have died if she had sucked blood.

She looked at the door, outside it was Lei, who kept looking at his wristwatch.

She straightened her clothes staring at me. It was as if she found a craving for something she knew she would never be able to touch.
