Chapter 19: That’ll Do For Now

After they finished their ice cream, the two made their way, hand in hand to the petting zoo. It was during their walk that she noticed Kian started to act a bit different. He squeezed Junie’s hand and she thought it felt clammy as well. She glanced up at his face and saw that his jaw was tight and he was staring ahead intensely.

“What’s wrong?” She watched as his dark eyes widened and he nearly stumbled back as he turned to face her.

“Nothing,” he assured her too quickly, waving his free hand in front of his face.

Junie raised an eyebrow, trying to quench her worry. “You say that, but you’re acting jumpier than I am, even though I’m the one undercover.” She gestured to her outfit, hoping it would lighten the mood.

He laughed, and Junie frowned, able to tell that it was a forced laugh. It was one of his signature chuckles that she loved, but the way Kian forced it out made it sound like it was mixed with a cough.
