Chapter 33: Far Worse

Junie just watched, unable to look away from where her mom and Kian sat across from her, deep in conversation about a show that they were both currently watching.

They decided to stop for dinner before heading back to Junie’s apartment. This was something that she was not looking forward to since it would mean there would have to be deep conversation with the three of them trapped together at a table.

Junie tried to keep the wary, expectant look off of her face as they sat down at a booth. She watched the wheels turn in Kian’s head as he slid into the booth beside her mom. She knew him well enough to know that he didn’t want her mother to have to sit alone. The older woman wouldn’t have minded but Junie couldn’t help but think him sweet anyway for his considerate nature.

“How’s work, Juniper?” her mom asked at once before they even had a chance to look at the menus.
